Did Zumatello say that there would be zero tolerance for violent protest? I am sure there was some utterance along those lines following Marikana (although it may have even been before that).

But then the track record shows that the truck drivers strike, the farm workers strike, and now this all have levels of violence that are tolerated.

The first thing that all of those with some leadership role say is that there are criminal elements involved. Or some opportunistic individuals. Which raises the question - for what purpose? Shops being looted may very well be criminal activity but if you were a criminal mastermind why would you have arb people loot a bottlestore? Or do the many all grab what they do and then all pitch up at the don's house to hand over what they looted?

Why is the response never that government stuffed up?

I just don't think that government listen. It is almost that they believe that because they have been appointed (not elected - nobody in government is elected to a position) that they now get to tell people how it is. That decisions are taken to suit the so called leaders regardless of what people may want.

Sadly, it may be true that government only listens when a rock gets thrown through the window.

That's the problem. They got nothing to lose. Add to that virtually no education and an innate inability to think logically and we have a recipe for disaster.

It's bad enough when it's localized but what happens when these clowns go on a national rampage??

It's harsh but they should be dealt with in a similar or same manner as the Marikana miners were.

Zero tolerance.

Sadly, I think you are right. We have this seemingly perpetual cycle of violence. Someone has to break the cycle and I think that government could actually listen for once because it might work.

Shooting the rampagers is an option. But if you are going that route please have government officials in the crossfire.
 
Things are looking very harsh there now, judging by some of the journos on twitter.

Police station is under attack. Private vehicles being overturned and burned... petrol station occupied and looted. French journalist with a severe head wound..

The community is is frustrated at the moment, because minister Richard Baloyi did not address the people as he promised. They are once again trying to move from Zamdela to Sasolburg DBD, but are being contained at the taxi rank by the SAPS. Live ammunition and rubber bullets have been used.

Personally if I was a national business owner (Cashbuild being one that jumps to mind), I would claim from insurance, then close down the store and move elsewhere...

Sucks for the store owners, especially those who don't have inn-sewer-ants and have to close down for good :(
 
Latest information that we received a few minutes ago:
"Minister Richard Baloyi has spoken on Karabo FM moment ago, confirming that the Metsimaholo and Ngwathe local municipalities will not be merged. He called for peace and normalisation of the situation, requesting people to return to work and learners to go back to school. However, it is not clear if this message has reached the rampaging crowd.

The crowd, estimated to be about 8000, remains contained in Zamdela. The Zamdela SAPS station is currently under severe attack. They are on the rampage in the area, burning and destroying private property."
