Sat-3 cable to get giant speed boost

This bothers me a little. Telkom knew that the SAT3 cable was congested and should have upgraded a long while ago. Only now that Seacom is going live do they announce the news. Shows how far we have been screwed over.
 
None of this Seacom stuff will help yet. We will be stuck with crappy capped bandwidth for a long time. Wait, maybe telkom will bring back R7 call plan again, ah remember the days......then we can really get 'excited'.
 
See what competition does? You can't blame companies for taking advantage of monopolies. No business is going to dish out services cheaply, unless it is a charity or faces stiff competition.

The blame lies squarely with those who make laws and policy.

This technical update is mostly replacing interface cards at the cable landing stations.

Lol Telkom you make me laugh!SO now that you are about to get trumped in the bandwidth/cost department, the time is over for milking and raping us for every last cent that you can and actually use the full potential of SAT3 that you should have passed on to consumers in the first place.

Once again the greed of Telkom is exposed we see right through you pathetic strategy, you money grabbing a$$clown.

It's always been known, though nobody wanted to stick their heads out and say they said so, that Telkom never utilised the true capacity of their FO cable. I rather should say "our cable" as the SA taxpayer bought and paid for that 3 times over, all that while it was running at gimped capacity, and over-sold to everyone's demise.

You think Telkom hasn't anticipated this eventuality of competition?? Think again what the Ace up their sleeve might be...

So, Telscum will now be "upgrading" their (our) cable, selling this back to you in a "more competative" manner, and you'll LOVE them for it.

Now, think who the real idiots here are...

Every day now on MyBB there are articles about advances in the telecomms arena and in pricing. We have seen three articles on price drops this month alone.

You can either be bitter about it and cry in your pillow... or you can put your big girl panties on and join the rest of us in celebrating every small victory.

I honestly don't care if they were holding capacity back.

Looking forward Seacom is going live. SAT-3 is getting upgrading and several other connections are in the works.

Internet in south africa has never looked better :)

Yet they wish to be have the title of leading provider in SA? This is how Vodacom beats them to it...
 
Telkom announced plans to upgrade these cables a long time ago, it's just that the timing makes it look like a reaction. They were probably pushed to do it by both the increased requirement and by competition.

I am sure the sums will show Telkom that upgrading this cable would not only pay for itself within months, but would increase demand from backhaul, right across the national backbone too.

Do you think Telkom would have invested in the upgrade of the SAFE/SAT3 cable if Seacom / EASSY etc weren't coming on board?

Actually, this is not the first time the cable has been upgraded. The last upgrade was in 2005....

... and we have known for some time now that they were planning another upgrade. The upgrade has been in the works, Telkom is just taking the opportune time before Seacom goes live to re-announce this upgrade.

Let's see. When all Telkom wholesale users move to one of the other suppliers, if only to stop dealing with Telkom, 90% of Telkom's SAT3 bandwidth will be available, but will anybody want it?
