SAT3 to get another competitor

and will they be landing in SA without Doc interference? i guess not

indication of how the market sees the probability of the govt-led cable actually happening?

um. i dont see it happening unless they are 51% african owned they cant land here remember. im sorry but that is still the most retarded thing ive ever heard of.

security reasons my a**. ask this question. who the **** would want to invade SA's telecoms system? ummm for that matter who the **** would want to invade SA full stop. im not talking zim refugees here im talking invading armies.

nobody around the world wants to invade us because they dont wanna inherit all the cr*p that comes along with this country

Nice to see private sector interest in cables. However, with the constant interference by government, I don't see this happening, at least not by the deadline that they've set out.

Just on a quick side note, does anyone one know what happened to the Flag System that was touted to be laid?

ANOTHER competitor to SAT3... oh no, not ANOTHER one... aren't we saturated with competitors by now?
Oh... sorry, we don't have one yet.

Uhm guys.. ok maybe I'm ignorantly positive, but I saw this differently.

I saw this as: perhaps now that the DOC HAS given the legal framework (51% African and what not), investors can deal with it.

They certainly would not have considered such huge investment without considering the political interference that have gone before.

I'm positive. Soon (its imminent) we are going to be vomiting all the bandwidth that are being forced down our throats.

Just my 2c.

At the moment it's just a guideline publicised for comment. It's not a law yet, thank God. Hopefully the government will come to its senses, or, hope against hope, Ivy and Lyndall will be replaced by someone with some common sense. I think the consortium is forging ahead with the cable under the misconception that NO-ONE could be as stupid and self-serving as the people who came up with those regulations. Or maybe they'll just land the thing in Walvisbaai and run it across the border into SA...

This just makes me sick... Once again government is looking out for number one, government. They don't give a flying @$^* about what their greed is doing to our economy! :(

They state that any company wishing to land a cable in SA has to be 51% black owned, but are they willing to fork out 51% of the $865m bill? I presume not!

So once again it's a win-win situation for government, where they either score a $450m stake plus controlling share in the cable (thus allowing them once again artificially inflate access charges) or just continue to milk the SA public through Telkoms rediculously overpriced SAT3.

Confused

On Friday, Shope-Mafole revealed this meeting had resulted in a resolution on which cable government would back.

“We have agreed to propose to Cabinet that Nepad's Uhurunet and the African West Coast Cable be incorporated into one cable – Uhurunet – but as separate entities. This agreement still needs to be presented to Cabinet, but once that is done, we think it will be a happy ending for all of us,” she said.

The Govt, DoC and Public Ents, are proposing that Uhurunet and West Coast Fibre will be incorporated into one cable as separate entities?

Wossat mean?

Is it actually good sense, we'll actually only build one but pretend we both own it? Or is it a recipe for years of legal battles about who gets what money as a backhander etc etc...

Plz, this won't materialise in at least the next 5 years!!
I think I am being a little overly optimistic as well!

Isn't there a Ladbrokes or something site where one can place bets on really strange things? - like Poison Ivy & Stalin-Mafole actually walking their talk...

I love your positive attitude... but do find it weird how those of us who view things in a positive light almost need to apologise for our views...

I too see it as a good thing that a number of operators are showing an interest and seeing the potential available in this country and Africa as a whole!
