Save a rabbit from becoming bunny chow

Feed the bunnies to the Zoo. There's good eating on those. Giving 2000 bunnies away is just going to end in tears, neglected and abused bunnies and in some cases, more unwanted bunnies.
In fact. Hold a Bunny Bunny Chow event - all proceeds go to the Zoo and to buy tiny bunny sized condoms.

People are so far removed from reality its crazy. What do you think carnivores eat? I thought the bunny park donating them to the zoo was a perfect solution to the overcrowding problem. Now facebook has blown up saying animal cruelty etc. Has the whole world gone insane?!?

What do you think happens in the wild when a predator wants to eat, a humane killing or something? Its life, and the food chain, and how things work you numpties! It saves the zoo some money in buying chickens.

They can bloody well eat not as cute animals like the rest of us.

Rabbit meat is extremely healthy, why give it to the animals. I'll adopt 20, I will make some mean dishes with that meant :o

Sometimes logic and emotions collide.

Makes sense to cull those bunnies and feed the zoo animals, will save a fortune. Would work just as well if they used animals from the SPCA... I can't see that happening though.

It would make a lot of people upset but then why do we keep these animals in a zoo ? We have to farm other animals just to keep those zoo animals alive.
Why keep the zoo animals alive then ?

The government hasn't looked after the Zoo since the 90's, it's an NGO. Zoos might be a remnant of a bygone era, but the more modern ones are some of the only places some animal species are still alive. Also we've not had a polar bear in SA since 2014 :-(, that I'd agree on Polar bears in captivity don't work.

Thank you. I have not been to a zoo for many years.

You stay maybe 50kms away from the park - why not just pop round and grab the ones roaming the streets.

I seriously would though if it's legal. Damn I can feed my family for a week easy on 20 bunnies. I also have the space, maybe have the copulate and make it a sustainable food source:D

?

imagine the outcry! I agree though. One SPCA PTS 800 animals a month.
I understand that something like cats might not be a healthy thing to feed other animals... but then again wild cats eat other cats.
Not as a main source of food but it does happen.

Interesting idea though. I wonder if someone would be willing to do the research.

A whole new campaing. Sterilize your animal or it will become Zoo food.

I just checked. In 2009 - the Sandton SPCA had to spend R10 000 a month on disposing of carcasses at a landfill. Its probably around R14 000 by now. A month.
I'm not being heartless, I own a 16 year old (slightly overweight) Daschund that I love dearly.
I'm being practical.
But why not supply the Zoo? Granted - I think chemically euthanised animals are classified as medical waste.

In fact. Why not have a big-ass rabbit petting zoo at the Johannesburg Zoo. And use the excess population as feed for the lions? win-win. The kiddies get to pet bunnies. The Bunnies get to breed like, well, rabbits. And the zoo can cut its meat bill.
