Now is your chance to save a rabbit.

If you cannot stand the thought of 2‚000 rabbits being sent to the slaughter‚ you have an opportunity to adopt one of the furry creatures.

The City of Ekurhuleni said on Monday it would donate the rabbits to Johannesburg Zoo as food for carnivores. The decision was taken to ease overpopulation at Benoni Bunny Park.

“If you are interested in adopting a rabbit‚ you can go to the bunny park and fill in an adoption form for application‚” Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said.

“(Adoption can be done) either as individuals or an organisation and we will take it from there. We are hoping to complete the whole process by December‚” said Gadebe.

Nothing wrong with eating rabbit, similar to chicken. Donate to a welfare shelter.
 
The situation surounding this is just not right.
If the municipality stepped in earlier and had these animals removed 2000 would not have beed the number.
This place was disgusting.
The people in the area just contrutes to the problem by dumping unwanted bunnies there. Sterize your freaking animal.

If this is done humanely they can even give the food to human shelters.
No clubbing of bunnies.

This again is a human problem.
This bunny park was animal cruelty.
Places like this should be stopped.
The owners were irresponsible and the local community was being just as big of a problem.

The zoo was in the news a while ago. The JHB municipality doesn't look after it so the animals go hungry. They should close that down as well.
Zoos petting zoos are archaic. If you want to see a polar bear google it.

The government hasn't looked after the Zoo since the 90's, it's an NGO. Zoos might be a remnant of a bygone era, but the more modern ones are some of the only places some animal species are still alive. Also we've not had a polar bear in SA since 2014 :-(, that I'd agree on Polar bears in captivity don't work.

You make a good point. Rabbits are delicious and an excellent source of protein, and with their propensity to breed, it is somewhat perplexing that Africa prefers chicken.

Rabbits breed far quicker than chickens, they taste pretty good. The biggest issue is that getting people to eat them. They keep thinking of this cute little furball.
 
Those rabbits - you don't need to fill out a form. Just grab one from the pavement. I see several of them - especially at dusk - roaming all around the area. Some travel quite a distance. There is this one house that does not have a fence and they're always running around in there. Luckily my complex does not allow pets otherwise my daughter would've saved hundreds of them.


Personally, I use one every now and then to test my new sunscreen or shampoo.
 
People are so far removed from reality its crazy. What do you think carnivores eat? I thought the bunny park donating them to the zoo was a perfect solution to the overcrowding problem. Now facebook has blown up saying animal cruelty etc. Has the whole world gone insane?!?

What do you think happens in the wild when a predator wants to eat, a humane killing or something? Its life, and the food chain, and how things work you numpties! It saves the zoo some money in buying chickens.
