Save power this winter, pleads Eskom

The solution is simple.

Subsidize gas appliances. People will then switch over to cheaper gas and stop using electricity.

Or have higher tariffs for peak hours, though that would probably be a nightmare to manage and implement :erm:

Peak hours are peak hours because that's when people arrive home and cook and wash dishes and shower and turn on heaters and whatnot - higher rates won't do anything to change that. Eskom are boned though, because what they need to do is to incentivise the adoption of gas and, especially, solar in order to lessen strain on their infrastructure. However insodoing they'd be knocking their income which they need to maintain and upgrade said infrastructure.

Pocket nuclear reactors... that's what we need.
 
get lost Eskom. I'm gonna turn on some more appliances tonight and leave them running for no reason.
 
Dont pay out our hard earned money in multimillion bogus bonuses, plead the South African people.

Gas isn't cheap anymore. Was about R190 for a 9 kg refill a week or two ago.

I use it for heating. Run one bar for around 4-5 hours a night. Lasts 2-3 weeks. Only takes the worst of the cold away.

I suspect gas is already subsidized indirectly via the fixed price. Also - NERSA crap all over Eskom's incentive schemes. Previously they could pay big industrials to cut power. NERSA now reckons they don't need that so they cut it. So not a lot of subsidizing going to happen (Except geyser and light bulbs afaik).

Hardly a constructive attitude - the only ones suffering as a result will be your fellow South Africans. If anything it gives Eskom more power - if there is a crisis then they can get authorization for more extreme measures.
 
I havent even switched on my underfloor heating yet.

I installed my solar power gear this past weekend so I'm ready for the load shedding.

85 W panel, regulator, 105 Ah battery and 2 x 200 W sine wave inverters.

I can run the most critical stuff for hours: router, laptop, lights and beer fridge :D

Hmmm. So the State-owned and police-enforced bulk-electricity-generation-monopoly asks consumers to have an even colder, darker winter ... and neither the State nor the monopoly is overthrown ... what hope is there for justice?

I went solar. Yeah, I know it'll be consumed in the revolution.

e.g. I can save time, but I don't have a time storage device.
 
Why not get the 30-40% of illegal power consumers to PAY for their bloody power!?!?!? Then come back and ask us to save.

Do not give a crap in any way, shape or form. The amount of the craps I give is zero, nil, nada, zip, squat, zilch.
There is nothing even remotely resembling a crap in my immediate vicinity.
As far as Eskom is concerned there have been zero craps in my location for years now.
In fact, I'm pretty sure that the crap dispensing hole is completely dried up and clogged as I have not seen one in about ten years.
