You know that Eskom is actually not making any money from Billiton, but rather subsidizing them?

Gas isn't cheap either, it was R105 for 5kg just last month. That's up from R85 just the previous year.
 
Gas costs (last time I checked) around R1.70 per kilowatt hour of energy, so much more than electricity. This is because the gas price is kept artificially more expensive than electricity on purpose so that Eskom is still needed.

In the US and canada, they exclusively use gas for heating and cooking, because it is half the cost of electricity.

As usual, our useless government can't do anything that doesn't involve greedy kickbacks.

Same here. Have both too. Electricity bill has dropped appreciably.

That is one big conspiracy. And here everyone was thinking it was due to profiteering by middlemen and retailers because Eskom was pushing people onto gas.

Don't know about Canada, but that's certainly not true of the US.

They haven't done enough, but they've made some small steps towards reigning in the gas rip-off.
 
If we turn everything off except the fridge and or freezer and Eskum decides to load shed or cut power and our meat goes off can we sue them?

Yep. Sad fact. I scuttle around turning the lights off, not for Eskom, but simply because I don't like waste. The giant overheads just down the road were active for three and a half days, and a fine way to persuade the community that there's a power crisis. NOT! :mad:

let them go rip out all the illegal connections around South Africa before they turn off the lights of paying citizens.

I use it for heating. Run one bar for around 4-5 hours a night. Lasts 2-3 weeks. Only takes the worst of the cold away.

We use gas for cooking, and a big 9kg(l) bottle lasts us about a year - my GF was here for about 5 years before me and only refilled after I moved in (guess she didn't cook much).

As for Eskom and their pleas, maybe if they stopped selling our extra capacity to neighbouring countries, we wouldn't have this problem? Blaming the government for failing to act quick enough when they realised they needed extra capacity to keep up with demand is BS. Surely some savvy financiers would have fronted the money - it's not like Eskom doesn't have a monopoly?
