where can i get an illegal connection done, im so tired of this ****. paying close to R2 per unit of electricity just is not on anymore, the other day I put in R500 and got 231 units of power, It is not like we use a lot but every time these pricks decide to turn power off on a sunday for the last 3 sundays we use more power when it comes back on. then you hear *******s like BHP billiton are getting their power subsidised while I am getting told to spare the power when im a paying customer who does not expect much, I expect my geyser and fridge stay on and I expect my PC's and internet stay on so **** off!! Also how many bonuses and what type of bonuses did the bosses at eskom get? im sorry but go to hell before I use less power. It is not my fault you do not know how to run things properly. do not make it your clients problems because you failed to plan properly, That is not how a business works.

Very true, it makes no sense whatsoever.
Eskum have run themselves into the ground and now we have to suffer because of this. They wanted x% and because that was turned down and we moaned they are blackmailing us now with threats of blackouts.
If you work out the price of gas and then work out how much energy gas provides per kilo the gas works out to be about 4 times more expensive that electricity.I did the calculation a while back when electricity was cheaper than it is now.

9 kg is a smallish bottle about 75 cm tall.
The energy output from LPG gas is as follows :12.9 Kwh/Kg
If a 9 kg bottle is R212 then 9 x 12.9 =116.1kw
That works out at R1.82 /kw
Now it seems that gas is almost on a par with electricity, and there is no other crap like demand side levy and surcharge ETC.

Also other factors have to be taken into account, like whether gas stoves use the energy more efficiently.
Gas should be cheaper than it currently is too.
I installed my solar power gear this past weekend so I'm ready for the load shedding.
85 W panel, regulator, 105 Ah battery and 2 x 200 W sine wave inverters.
I can run the most critical stuff for hours: router, laptop, lights and beer fridge
How much that setup cost?
Yes and No, I thought the same earlier "What's the point of turning everything off if I get load shed anyway" but it's the as saying "What's the point in voting, my 1 vote doesn't make a difference". You just need to do it and hope everyone else follows suite.

As I said, the savings is a bonus. The spend was purely to reduce the dependency on the grid.
I have spoke to a few people that see between 1 and 2 years on a 9kg. A post somewhere above said already over a year on a 15kg.
So ye - a couple of years is not an unreasonable assumption for 46kgs. Unless you intend to heat your house off it too I suppose. My intended use is cooking.
Total cost for 5 plate hob, 46kg gas bottle, installation and certificate came to R8k. Considering we needed a new hob anyway it was a good price.
EDIT: Refilling of a 46kg is R900.

Yep. Also dreading the combinations of deadlines + no juice for laptop. Thankfully the office isn't too far away, open 24/7 and the juice there will never be down (mission critical servers). Still...not looking forward to the prospect.

Power just came back on 5 min ago, so about 2h45m without juice. Laptop battery was almost dead from watching video presentations by candelight... think i have a headache now from the candle burning away.
Gonna try to get my work done way before the next deadline in case Eskom strikes again

An example of where Eskom can save money, last year I went to Santon convention center, the AV company was setting up stage and lights, day 1 was rehearsals for these company awards. Day 2 was the actual event... I can only guess at costs of at least 30 people and their equipment.
