Saving my MacBook keyboard and trackpad

This MacBook is the 2nd laptop where I have used the onboard trackpad and keyboard all the time, the previous was an ACER who's keyboard gave out after a yrs everyday use, repair price was over R700.

With that in mind I want to protect my Mac's keyboard and trackpad from say "overuse" as I'm pretty sure replacement would cost a small fortune and I'm using this as a daily runner.

I have an external monitor on my desk, maybe BT keyboard, Trackpad and leave the MacBook high and dry on shelf untouched.

How do you guys use your daily Mac's?
Do you use the onboard provided equipment OR have mouse an keyboard setup.

I only ever use the onboard keyboard and trackpad when I'm not at my desk.

My normal setup is to connect MacBook Pro to external monitor and use a apple wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad. The MacBook is basically just a screen that has iTunes open while at my desk.

I only use the onboard keyboard and trackpad and I've yet to have one fail.

EDIT: Correction - one did fail but that was due to a swollen battery and when I replaced that everything went back to normal.

Yeah, I never had one that failed on me either...

The hinges did go thou - macbook air.

Mostly use my MBP as a desktop at the home and office.

Apple BT keyboard and trackpad at home.
Take the Trackpad along to work - use my Kanex keyboard to jump btw my Macbook, and Windows desktop. [Mac is plugged in to the external of the desktop].

So do relatively little type directly on it.
That being said, still works/feels like the day I bought it - so, touching wood - figure it should outlast my need to upgrade!

I would think that the quality on the Macbook is more than sufficient that you would not need to worry about those sort of failures? The trackpad is a marvel, and would be a shame not to use.
