Saying Goodbye to Gmail.

follow up, we Got the original phone back today looks good and upon putting the sim in we where able to get a OTP that worked with the Google account. For all the jackasses, it is a free ****ing world we can do whatever the **** we want with our networks. Nothing wrong with learning how to setup email servers and firewalls might even be handy later on who the **** knows maybe trump imposes a ****ing Google tariff or some ****. I actually hope he does just to piss in pool

They had to replace the screen and battery was replaced as well. So it is good as a backup. We had to wait for the battery. I am going to figure this port forwarding **** out because not only do I want to try and setup an email server but I want to setup CCTV later as well.
Now that it's back up and running, have you setup your 2FA with backup codes for all your google accounts so that you can avoid this situation in future?

Or have you moved everything already?

PS: I agree, there is nothing wrong with learning - just a word of warning, unless you work in the area, the knowledge soon fades (personal experience - I spent 10 years with a Mikrotik* that I had doing all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff (dual ISP's; traffic routing at the individual client level, etc) - I've forgotten everything I learnt at the time of setting it up. I eventually mothballed it.

It's fun while it's fun, until it suddenly isn't fun any longer

Yes did what needed to be done but decided to print out the backup codes because figured it is a good idea. Got Google Authenticator going on the old phone and the new one so both get the little codes to unlock it. Think it is all I can do for now but on Steam's side we only got access a few min ago.

My oldest is studying but loves to tinker with Linux as well so I figured between new brain and old brain we can figure some stuff out. It is something else to do over the weekends.

Been using gmail since December 2005. Without any problems. Whichever email service you migrate to will need you to have some brains, at the very least.

I registered my account in 2008. Before that I use to use Yahoo but that account doesn't exist anymore.

I avoid using Google for anything that doesn't need it.

Proton automatically creates aliases for me when doing a sign up and if I don't need it, I can nuke it without worrying about losing my mailbox.

I use Bitwarden as password manager for work and Proton Pass for personal.

I even use Proton Wallet for my crypto and Drive for my important documents and photos.

Proton VPN for all my and the wife's devices.

Self hosting mail is fun for a weekend project but that's all it's good for.

If you want to self host something and want to keep your router ports closed, get a domain and use cloudflared. Cloudflared uses a tunnel to access the server/app or whatever you want to do without your direct IP being linked publicly. I rest easier since implementation. The free option does not support mail I think but I leave it to you to check.

I moved to Tutanota when it was 1 EUR and got a .com domain for $9 then moved over to Mailbox.org for 1 EUR when Tuta jacked the price to 2 EUR. I moved to iCloud just before Mailbox jacked the price to 3 EUR. Subbed to 50gb iCloud plan for R15 p/m with hide my email and canned the custom domain. Works fine and no issues so far.

If only you did that before this whole debacle you wouldn't be in this situation now.

If you ever register your own domain name for important emails, work through a provider like Namecheap.com. They are consistent, safe and secure and you have no problems with your domain. I registered my first domains with them in 1998/1999 when they were still in testing phase. All my TLD domains are with them for over 25 years now. Never had any problem with them or my domain names.

Think you missed the point
My second oldest got locked out of their Gmail account when upgrading to newer phone. We had to do a SIM swap as well. Regardless of us having access to the phone number, the password for whatever reason Google cannot authenticate the account. So the hell with Gmail. Thankfully the steam account was basically empty. So only a R1.2k Loss. But I will never trust Gmail again for important stuff.

I am thinking to test out Proton or Zoho but I have never used the services. Any thoughts on them and if they are any good? Otherwise I am thinking outlook maybe.

If you set up 2FA before the time you wouldn't have been locked out of your account, not so?

We had password, and 2FA authentication to pin in the OTP. But I think because we did a SIM swap with the number Google no longer accepts the OTP. We tried we failed.

everything only started working again once the original phone was fixed. To date I don't know why this happened.

**** is going to get real once they start auto banning email addresses and **** like that. When the internet was born it was on shitty hardware. How the **** can't we host our own services anymore? Any shitty laptop is better then most servers was back then and any 25mb/s line is more then what most cities had when all this started. Maybe old school retro internet and non centralized hosting should become at thing again.
