Scammed - where to go for help?

Please describe the scam accurately, with dates, components and price. How was delivery promised. What have you done so far to reduce your loss?

I am aquainted with the folk who operate the business through a component supplier
Thanks, Chris. It is a very long story, will send the details when I'm home. Do you have a physical address for them?

it's a very long story over many weeks. but in short, paid via EFT, they delivered a faulty laptop with pirated software. they collected it again as it was under warranty. since then it has been one lie after another, e.g. they say they sent it to the supplier but the supplier has no record of it, the shop refuses to give a reference number, address, the names of the owners, etc etc. Two different people reply, contradict themselves, refers everything to a fictitious manager. It's just exhausting because everytime you follow up, you know it will be a waste of time because every single detail has turned out to be a lie so far.
Mind listing what you paid and what you got vs expected?

Ok. Reason I asked was to try determine if it's prima facie criminal. Seems not.

Maybe approach small claims court. It's free and lawyers not a prerequisite. Your case seems solid enough.

Waiting for a reply to this.

/subs to see what the outcome is, as OP went awfully quiet on details

My supplier is TVR Distribution in Montague Gardens, Cape Town.

They advertised a "Fire Sale from closed business" in Jan 2020. The list was incomplete so I went along. There were many laptop batteries there and I was trying to ascertain the manufacture date and identify the product code

One gent by the name of Faisal (I think Pangarker) said he was from The Laptop Shop in Kraaifontein was very helpful, as he had a chart of makes and models and compatible batteries and I was able to identify several units and purchase them

I subsequently heard from the accounts lady at TVR that he operated some kind of scam in that he returned stuff that was specifically sold "as is" and the boxes did not contain the original part, but dud, swollen up batteries. She also said his mobile phone number was incorrect but said the writing on the invoice was so poor she could not make it out

Not much help, but if you have an invoice, the Small Claims Court is a start. But you need a physical address to deliver the summons
