I'm struggling to connect my Brother mfc 4620's scan function in linux mint. Pls tell me how to go about it. Thanks. The printing works fine, mint had the drivers already.

Look for Xsane image scanner. It works on just about any scanner.

I treid Xsane but it didn't recognise the device. The I found drivers of sort on the manufacturer's website so now it kind of recognises i have a scanner attatched but gives me an I/O error.

In the process I added several things related to scanning from my synaptic package manager, probably some unnecessarily. should i just wipe all the sane things I installed and start from scratch or what?

I know it's a cop out, but I've given up on sane. I install the scanner's XP drivers under XP in a VirtualBox, and scan from the VirtualBox (same with printers which don't have Linux drivers).

Well I'm running a netbook with an 8GB SSD so I don't really have space to install XP in a virtual box. However I do have WINE. Do you think I could get it right through wine or not?

Ok, I think I'll try that, but do you imagine I could get the same result through WINE? I'm so tired of windows and would prefer to steer clear of it

Have you read the wiki on Mint to see if there is something specific you need to do to get scanners to work?

Give us the output of lsusb and the error message of sane.

I doubt very much whether your scanner's driver will work under Wine. You may want to consider purchasing Vuescan. It doesn't require installation, so you can run it off a flash disk.

I don't see your particular model number in the list of supported scanners, but the scanning unit may report another number to software querying it.

I accidentally gave the wrong model, really sorry, it is Brother MFC-8420.

lsusb readout:
paul@paul-minty ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 04f9:0142 Brother Industries, Ltd MFC-8420
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:c308 Logitech, Inc. Internet Navigator Keyboard
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 045e:0040 Microsoft Corp. Wheel Mouse Optical
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Sane error:
Failed to open device 'brother:bus1;dev1':
Error during device I/O.

Thanks

The MFC 8420 is on Vuescan's list of supported scanners. You can download the software to try it out, but the trial scans have $ watermarks all over them.
