Science Must Fall? - UCT Fallist discusses Decolonization

Ye gods. I suppose it's possible to dig up anything. Problem is, is it worth anything.

Translation: Science doesn't like our woo-woo so let's change science.

Apart from the 'educated' language, do you even understand what it is saying?

Question. Who made the modern world possible - with technology, space travel, food productivity increases, you name it. Science or the woo-woo merchants.

Do you have an example of any other African country that has made it's Scientific institutions "Afrocentric"?

I think that they are simply swapping the word South African context with the words decolonisation and afrocentric. I suspect that the majority of theses across the various disciplines, submitted at South African Universities would contain research done in South Africa.

Yeah probably..

One speech doesn't embody the scientific methodology. Whether or not it supports your point of view. Again. There's no afrocentric quantum physics, physics, thermal dynamics.

If you feel your culture is excluded from science, well, address your feelings. Science is science. If it doesn't interest you, don't study it. And don't expect the curriculum to match your expectations either.

Figures.

As a practical sort of person, I've been wondering what an Afrocentric wheel would look like. Can't be round, can it.

There may be some herbal remedy in there that leads us to a plant with an active ingredient that helps for some ailment but stuff like the lightning being directed to someone by magic? BS.

I mean it is such BS it warrants as much investigation as me telling you fairies live in my left shoe.

You can't test the metaphysical with science. Those who think you can, and get offended when the BS is pointed out, can go join this girl calling for the end of science.

Actually you can, but in general devising effective tests is difficult. There has been some MRI work done with prayer/trance states that has had some interesting results that show something is going on in the brain, but we are far far from understanding what is going on.

so all science comes from europe or the west... right. you are a fool.

i will name 2 things: abacus & black powder

i still want to know, why there is not black african sciences around this today, what is stopping them now and did previously.

your eurocentric argument means that a new word needs to be created for "science in africa".

You can equally ask why didn't they invent the wheel.

To be fair though, there is some evidence of mathematics (other than just counting), and the knowledge of how to smelt metals passed down through Africa from the Mediterranean.

The wheel question is valid though - there were surely enough escaped slaves from the Arab world who observed various advances such as carts etc. and enough time to transmit the knowledge throughout Africa just as metal working did.

The ruins at Zimbabwe indicate at some point someone figured out how to put one stone on top of another but how or why that knowledge was there for a brief period and then disappeared while everyone else continued to live in mud huts is a mystery that may never be solved.

FYI if we are talking about decolonising Africa - we mustn't forget Zulu beadwork should go (slave trade beads originally) and Venda huts - paint was introduced by us terrible colonisers in the 1930's I think (fact check needed). Although they were painting with ocher before that, all the colours, and several of the designs are Western in origin.

Oh and while we are at it - shweshwe cloth and Swazi blankets (both trade cloth) need to go as well.

If you are going to be so militant about something you don't get to cherry pick what you want to keep.

Sadly however the truth is that this not what they actually want. If you suggested this the #fallers would freak out of their tiny brains. It is at the heart racist hate speech against Whites and the West. I don't want to speculate or indulge in theories as to what the root is, or what the ultimate goal is, but one thing I am sure of - getting rid of the conveniences of the West is not on the agenda.

That's what's being called for. For the academic institutions here to be more afrocentric in their studies.

No that's not their call. That's your call.

Traditional medicine has always been studied. Scientists are not blind or stupid.

Those that goes #sciencemustfall are stupid. When you are tagging that with your blackness it makes you look even more retarded.

I think everyone is missing the point here. These students can't grasp the fundamentals of science (and the scientific method), without this, whatever you are studying is rather pointless as you cannot evaluate evaluate what you are reading.

Popper's Conjectures and Refutations should be compulsory reading for *any* university student.

That should be like duh but it escapes these people...if someone came along and said, hey here's a possible shortcut that could save you potentially billions in RnD, which evil capitalist wouldn't take that opportunity?

If you think scientists are not subject to same biases, prejudices and errors in thinking as other human beings you're naive.
And while the scientific method goes a long way to nullifying this human fallibility, it can do nothing when it comes to choosing what to study and the resources available. In your ideal universe a scientist studies whatever he wants. In the real world scientists are subject to the same human emotions as the rest of us. They also want glory and a nobel prize, the admiration of their community and peers and to win the race to whatever discovery is currently in fashion. They also want jobs and funding and to avoid ridicule, just like all of us.
So if a scientist seriously wants to study african witchcraft - for example - he or she may choose not to because (as we've seen here) they will be subjecting themselves to ridicule. So they'll study genetic engineering for pest resistance instead. In this way the progress of science is not as objective and value free as the scientific method itself is, but is subject to the normal frailties of human thinking.
How many scientists in the past chose not to study astronomy or to dissect human bodies for fear of the church? To think the progress of our world view through science is value free and objective is just absurd.

But this isn't exactly the issue that is actually being addressed with their demands. The call is to 'restart science' which is patently stupid to the nth degree.

That is what this whole thing is really about.

Much like that infamous president who couldn't see himself acting ethically so promptly declared corruption a crime in a western paradigm only..

You can do some MRI work but the idea of you walking on the astral plane or something as a result of that trance is not falsifiable. It isn't science.
