I would love to know how science is taught at UCT that centers Europe? Erases the contribution of Africa or Asia?
People aren't given history lessons when they learn Physics or Maths.
They just frikken learn it. If every concept had to be explored to the depths of their origin we would have undergraduate degrees stretching into the decades.
What purpose does it serve to learn how we came about to use Arabic numerals when you start a Maths course?
In addition what he is basically saying is that South Africa (and more importantly, people who attend university) must go along with this lots' giant experiment of decolonisation even though they themselves don't know what it means.
We must just suck it up and do it. Be damned if it doesn't work.

With regards to Witchcraft studies, perhaps more education on the dangers of this are needed.
When I was still in South Africa, countless times I would have to mediate between various members of my workforce who claimed X had bewitched him and so on. It was destructive and resulted in conflict and worse.
I also had to assist guys who were swindled out of thousands of Rands because a witchdoctor had a dream and told them to get a R80 000 loan from Africa Bank, put it in a yellow box at the Witbank Taxi rank and by the next day it would be R160 000.
Reading the classified section of the Daily Sun, witchdocters had found the cure to Cancer, AIDS, making people fall in love with you, helping you get a loan, penis enlargement, breast enlargement, buttock enlargement, abortion, give you a promotion, make your boss like you, make you invisible and so on.
So yes, lets do a scientific study and maybe this can help people understand that they are wasting money and putting themselves at risk by following the advice of these witchdoctors.

A generation or two? Billions still believe in 2000 year old flying donkeys and talking snakes :erm:
Unfortunately beliefs like these are tied into cultural identity, same as creationism. Admitting the world isn't 6000 years old means standing against an inclusive community. Which is largely why creationists and science must fall mouth breathers are anti science in the first place.

That what you are referring to is religion and everyone believes in something but religion is not science.
Science is trusted by the rest of the world no matter what religion.
So by trying to fuse/compare the two is what the student's mistake was first.
Irrelevant. These people are being ridiculed for believing in outright nonsense, "science" or not. Mocking them while you also believe in outright nonsense, even under the guise of religion, is downright hypocritical.
BTW science is questioned/denied all the time because of religious reasons.

I don't mind people believing weird things at all...the expression of that belief is the issue. Stay home and worship, go to "places of worship" and worship - fine. Start agitating for universities to teach creationism \ other articles of faith in the Science faculty - not fine. Or endangering me on my journey home while doing the agitation - not fine.
I haven't seen religious types exhibiting that sort of idiocy so I'm more tolerant of that set of beliefs than whatever "Fallism" is meant to represent.
