Screamer Uncapped ADSL R399p/m

I signed up for a Screamer 512kbps unlimited account this week (before I did much research on service levels etc.). I swore that the first ISP that offered a Seacom-based package would get my business.

So far:
- I had to call them 2 days after applying for my account to request my userid - they had forgotten to send it to me (no big deal, but a bit stupid)
- the first day (yesterday) was horrendous. The service was up and down like a yo-yo. I called tech support on numerous occasions - usually got their voicemail but eventually got a person and "Seacom is down, it'll be fixed in the morning". I switch back to my Telkom accounts.
- it's the next day and this morning it didn't work again. Called again, eventually things come up.
- BUT, the overseas traffic is being routed via Telkom (not Seacom)?!?? And it's a slow, if not slower, than my Telkom accounts. Traceroutes show the hop from Pretoria to London in telkom-ipnet.co.za network - hmmmm - just like my Telkom accounts.

I've been through so many ISPs in the past year and I'm shocked how bad they all are. I'm not giving up on these guys yet. They seem well-meaning enough and their unlimited ADSL accounts, if they work and are as advertised, could be a giant killer (or at least put a lot of downward price pressure) in the ADSL market. They just need me to come and get them organised, and a bit more customer-oriented.

HA..HA HAAAA....No more paying 67R/G for TelkomSA ......Signed for 384Kbs Unlimited... I'm Loving it.... except the funny IP address i got and port 21 been blocked No remote FTP servers.

Hi Guys
As per normal we are very busy making sure our systems are able to handle the volumes that we hope to be able to supply. Although our systems are rhobust we were let down by some up stream providers and the recognition of our IP's which meant that we were forced to NAT our network which prevented some of our clients using our system for what they needed.

We are committed to providing the SA Consumer with the most affordable broadband available, be it on our own WiMAX network or over ADSL.

We should have our IP's recognised on all networks within the next 2 weeks and we will then stop NAT'ing and will operate as a Tier 1 ISP.

A lot of our clients have been very complimentary about out service but we do realise that there are those that feel we have not given them the ultimate service that we are aiming for and that they expect from us.

As a token of appreciation to those clients who feel they have not received a great service but have stayed with us and helped us by stress testing our systems I have been authorised to offer you a full discount for your November bill.

So if you feel you were not able to use the system to its maximum in Nov please PM me your account no and you will be credited for your Nov invoice. As the debit order runs have already gone through this credit will be applied against your invoice at the end of Dec.

Thanks again for your help and patience. We promise it will be worth it in a week or two.

Oh yes, that reminds me of that caveat, with the IP range being internal, you're unable to use Passive FTP ports (which most servers nowadays do for some reason, they connect through 21 but assign you a different port and then route traffic to you, with the internal IP the server doesn't know WTF to send the data because all it sees is the proxy/outside address)

One way to get around that is to use Active FTP, but an ISP shouldn't force us into things like this... wireless FTL

Fantastic move, well done screamer.

Wow, just imagine TelkomSA doing that. FAT F'ING CHANCE. Well done Screamer.

Why would Telkom have to give you a month free? Their bandwidth is usually always fast? <edit> and you get a public IP? Everything *just works* from the get-go

Sometimes the ADSL line goes down, and if its for longer than 24 hours you can claim credit for the days it's been down.

So a company that took clients' money and then didn't provide the service is getting a pat on the back for giving them credit for *pro rata* of the month? not even the entire month free? for a service not rendered?

No thanks

I tried to P2P, seems like all ports are blocked. It is not my firewall, if I move back to one of my old accounts it all works. The P2P works but don't expect more than 5kb/s download speed, upload 2kb/s. Bittorrent complains about the port not being open. This is on a 384 connection.

For using their clients for testing ? thats a new one. firstly they don't deliver as promised, overal product was about unusable at times not to mention horrrible speeds and not everything working. now just because a free month is given it is ...'well done !?'

they owe their clients because they ****ed up, period.

Ha, ha
You guys are so obvious it makes me sick.

If Screamer gave you free, fast bandwidth and it did not meet with your ulterior motives you would find something wrong with it.

I am getting great speed from Screamer. Even during their rocky start up period that they have offered a refund for, I was able to browse and do some downloading quite happily so I, for one, did not request a refund.

But then again I am not doing any torrents and that seems to be what all the complaining is about now.

If Screamer gave you free, fast bandwidth

this after a month of terrible service. which should be rightfully done so onto those who paid from their well earned money for a working service- no brainer.

one side pointer. if you pay for something but get only half of what was expected and then afterwards they refund you will you also be singing their praises because of the free bit and then magically forget about the part that you were 'ripped off' just because you now got a cookie ?

it is clients like you that makes out isps like screamer that will abuse their clientele to their will and then just apply the simple burb-a-babe to appease the coming riot.

clearly you need to think before eating away on free stuff...

...btw it is not just torrents
The last few days have been bad.....i do not use them for browsing since it is really sucks.I was ok for downloads till 2 days ago when during the night it worked for 3 hours only(according to my internet traffic monitor) an last night it did not work at all.......that is the story.....which is b......t.........
Jip... last two days they have had major problems, infact I have been using my iBurst account exclusively....
I signed up for a Screamer 512kbps unlimited account last week (before I did much research on service levels etc.). I swore that the first ISP that offered a Seacom-based package would get my business. I called these guys and they swore that this unlimited package would be using Seacom. Perfect for VoIP to the UK and really low latency, they said.

So far:
- I had to call them 2 days after applying for my account to request my userid - they had forgotten to send it to me (no big deal, but a bit stupid)
- the first day using the account last week was horrendous. The service was up and down like a yo-yo. I called tech support on numerous occasions - usually got their voicemail but eventually got a person and "Seacom is down, it'll be fixed in the morning". I switch back to my Telkom accounts.

- BUT, the overseas traffic was really slow and being routed via Telkom (not Seacom -) And it's slower than my old Telkom accounts. Traceroutes show the hop from Pretoria to London in telkom-ipnet.co.za network - hmmmm - just like my Telkom accounts.
- I contacted their tech support guys on Friday: "it's definitely going via Seacom", they said.

Today, my speedtest.net tests and traceroutes still show that I'm being routed via Telkom and I'm getting 190ms() pings and 313kbps/180kbps to Joburg; and dazzling 355ms pings and 50kbps/100kbps to London - totally useless international bandwidth.

Anyone else tried these accounts?

For those of you wanting to switch to Screamer as your ISP, I would hold off for a while...

They do not allocate public IP addresses to their ADSL capped clients.

I am currently running with SAOL and have been for a while now. When connecting with them we where allocated a 196.XXX.XXX.XXX address.

Last night I decided I wanted to test out SEACOM and Screamer and applied for an 5GB capped account.

Everything went through fine. Yet, after the connecting for the 1st time I saw that I was allocated a 10.XXX.XXX.XXX address.

This means that my DYNDNS address is useless to access my servers etc at home.

Never mind the fact that I had to tell their support staff that this was the problem after they had to look at it for about an hour today.:mad:

They said to me this could be activated within next week or so! But this account is actually useless to me right now as I host a small mail server etc on my ADSL line.

Looks like I am going to have to try another ISP that uses seacom. Suppose it is also my fault for just assuming that they would automatically just provide me with a public IP even if it is a Dynamic one.
I also signed up to screamer for 2 accounts 1 x 384 and 1 x 512 , I have had the following problems.

1) they did not "keep me in the loop" at all when I applied - I called several times only to be told that they could not tell me when I would recive my username and password.
2) You can never get through on their sales line.
3) The "Support" is even worse than Telkom- hard to belive I know - You call up and they just mumble something about seacom and telkom isp lines being slow etc. etc.
4) They offer NO solutions or any time line as to when it will be fixed.
5) When I finally get connected the speed is TERRIBLE - at some points the speed was 2Kbps!!!

My advice to ANYONE thinking about switching to them to reconsider - I have gone back to my trusted Pro2col connection ( IS reseller)

What a waste of 1000 bucks

!!!!!!BEWARE!!!!!

I wish someone like you on your first attempt to do something groundbreaking when you stumble.

Thank god people like Screamer are not afraid of the whiners and negativity generated by your type and go on to create great new products and competition in this country.

All your post has proven is that unhappiness and jealousy craves recognition and companionship.

that is handled in ground breaking pre-testing. ever heard of proper case testing* ? i suppose not. hec why ****ing care, when clients will do it all ;)

*testing 101: test for everything possible and not possible. brake it all normal ways and break it all 'unnormal' ways.

tell me how does the other isp's do it without causing such a huge cockup ? i'm sorry, but it is not "ground breaking" when you are connection to one cable instead of another and then offering "cheaper" uncapped- far from it, but we all like hype.

I see people complaining about Screamer here, and rightfully so. I see people not complaining about Screamer and rightfully so. Two types of expectations; one comparing our marginal success rate at being a "small step" for South African kind being on the level of international standards. And the other set? Well they could go back to Beltel, but heaven forbid, speaking up as a consumer.

bring on at&t please. tired of being flagshipped.

Heyloo!

How you Screamer peeps doing lately? Better than the DigiChilli woes?

I really want an uncapped account, but I've had no success with DigiChill, my account never works and the support is non-existant, takes about 2 weeks to respond to a mail which I send every morning.

So, I've been looking at Screamer now... can't find much on it though, what's everyone's experience thus far?
