Hi all,
I am considering getting Screamer as an alternative to Telscum, I will mainly be using it for online game play (XBL) - FPS and so and so....my question is this
* What should I choose..WiMax or WiFi?
* Will I be able to play FPS Games on a 512Kb/s line?
* Which is more stable of the above mentioned?
* And what size cap should I take if I don't take uncapped (seeing as its only 3c p/m out of cap)
* Will it be shaped or unshaped?
I would appreciate your input as I have read a lot of negative reviews of screamer.

As I have previously mentioned - Screamer has a lot going for it and it is great to have some choice in who you select as your telecommunications provider. However, I would not recommend them for online gaming.
Does anyone know if there is a performance difference between the Navini and CPE systems? I ask as I just signed up and am using the Navini and so far my signal keeps dissappearing (both yesterday morning and today, no signal) and when it is there the speeds are terrible (try 2 hours to download 20MB), and I am wondering if switching to a CPE will boost my speeds?
I wouldn't have recommended them 3 months ago but my connection has being flying since they did the upgrade and gave us all public IP's. I play WOW everynight and my average latency is around 200ms in game.
From what I've read on these forums there isn't a big performance difference between their WiFi or WiMAX connections except that WiFi is restricted to a max 512kb speed but you shouldn't need more than this to play.
Their bandwidth is definitely unshaped because I can download at max speed from anywhere I choose.
I dont know how heavy FPS is on bandwidth so maybe try capped fro a month or 2 to see what works out cheaper.

Fixed antenna kit will always be better. And the Navini's are a heap of crap anyway, Cisco have stopped making them even.

I would recommend screamer all the way. They had issues a while back while getting started but the service i get from them is great and my line is always screaming (excuse the pun) i can vouch this is truly uncapped and UNSHAPED.
Its your choice whether your gonna go for uncapped or capped i don't really see the benefits or capped as the uncapped is really cheap and also being at a fixed monthly rate which i like alot. I do heavy downloading from rapidshare on my 384 uncapped wimax line did 85.7 gigs last month
(go for wimax latency is reported to be much better to the base station than wifi, the cost is steep but well worth it for the equipment) always getting max unshaped speeds and i do play alot of fps games cod6,bbc2,cs:s occasionally sum supcom2 and latencies are obviously better on adsl lines but very playable to say the least on wimax lag here and there but u wont even notice it Take your pick, i did and im happy screamer client ( lol i hope ranting about screamer wont jinx my line or summing it tends to be the case

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I want to know more about some coordination problems with my installer. I am having difficulty to install it.
Damn, this is a bit of an issue since I can't install aerials on my complex, and my pings are pretty terrible at the moment (+- 300 to nearest local). I'll give it a bit of time and see if it improves. I also really don't want to pay another callout fee, considering I got charged R450 just for the guys to put a network cable down, so I don't want to think what a full on aerial install must cost.

well, the technicians fixed my kit to the TV antenna, as it was a very good spot for signal. Your complex should not have an issue with it, but just make sure before buying

Although we have most of Gauteng covered with Wimax signal there are areas that are "dead" because of the terrain and we fill those areas with WiFi. Sometimes this can be right underneath a WiMAX BS. You don't have to be concerned because the WiFi signal is just as good as the WiMAX one and the upfront rental is cheaper.
Has anyone here been getting dc's lately ?
The last four days everyday at 17:30 and 20:00 i get dc'd for roughly 5 minutes and then all is well again ?

We don't have any regular dc maintenence running and have had a look at the towers and have not seen anything. Do you not have any time based program running on your system that might be causing the dc? If it happens again let me know
Nah the tower was literally going down every evening for a week, but it has stopped now. Maybe someone experimenting with a magnetron next door..

Hi everyone.
I live in an area that is pretty much dominated by screamer. The entire estate has has screamer telephones/internet installed.
My problem is that, for over a year ive been arguing with screamer, trying to get a decent connection.
Then, about two weeks ago, it normalised. I could play wow, surf the net, stream movies and everything perfectly. It was really nice to have a "normal" internet connection for that time.
Then they did maintence or something last week. My net is horrible again. Ive called them many times, so much so that ive even spend over R1000 on airtime trying to get some help.
They have done so much and yet so little. They send technicians to my house, and they tell me what i already know, that i have high latency, but they cant do anything cause the people at screamer head office are gone.
They say they are going to reset this information and that information or i should reset the router or flush my dns and check the dns gateways and things. Ive had this latency issue for over a year...i would try the "normal" fixes before trying to waste my time calling screamer.
Another question here, how are you guys getting 200ms ? I get around 500ish when screamer is being good. At the moment, like last night, i was on 21k, yes...21k. Try doing arena with that...it looks like your hacking the game
