Screamer WiMax

Screamer techies suck. The tech gets back to me 17:10 on a friday and has the balls to tell me i am a difficult peraon to get hold of, and for what? He reckons i must scan the area for the wifi signal. Dude i pay yo to do that. Very unprofessional. Howzit plz sort out that supposed technician and please remind him im the customer and not his bloody appie. Bunch of idiots! Frederich you suck

Firstly, lol, now on to more serious business

I had the same on Kyalami tower last night , dips for about 10 seconds according to the router logs.

There will ba a 1hr upgrade happening on Sun and this will go away.

Day 3 and our tower is still down. Howzit plz bru my business is suffering! Im connecting to delmas tower

Hi, Fortunately the tower is not down but unfortunately you are one of 2 clients having a connection issue to the tower. I know the techies are working on getting it resolved as I type this,.

Wow man credit where credits due. 10 minutes after post tech calls me, explains whats going on and even apologises. Big up frederich. Thanks for the prompt response. Hopefully i can surf away tonite or tommorow

Screamer - why am I still getting 250ms+ local pings, not able to download anything off Xbox Live due to bandwidth issues and still not able to even get a speedtest to run past the latency stage. I am in the Edenvale area, and I have pinged the tower like the tech showed me (pulling my IP off of speedtest.net) and am not getting any lag or packet loss to the tower (highest ping was 3ms, did 20 pings with 0% loss).

This leads me to believe there is some issue with the network on your side?

Seems to be alot more stable now, only got 1 timeout last night. Latency looks ok.

I'm on the same tower in Edenvale, and I'm having the exact same issues as described above. When I joined Screamer I had to look for a position in my house with good signal. I eventually found a place that gave me 3 - 4 bar signal strength (out of a possible 6). I was happy with this as at least I was able to browse the net and play the odd online game (albeit with lots of lag and disconnects).

All went well for a few weeks, then all of a sudden the signal dropped to 1 bar, with disconnects happening frequently. I moved the modem to a higher spot in the house, closer to a window. I then got 3 bar strength again, and I thought all was sorted. Couple of days later, the signal completely dissappears. Move the modem now almost to roof height right by the window (had to stack some boxes together to be able to get it that high), but get the signal back up to 3 bars again, and I thought all was sorted. I'm sure you can see where this is heading...

It almost feels as if Screamer is throttling or shaping me whenever they see that I've got a decent signal?!?!? I've also noticed that during the night time, typically after 12h00, the signal gets better with fewer disconnects, and then deteriorates again during daytime hours. Weekends the signal are also worse off than during weekdays.

I'd like Screamer to comment on a couple of things:

1. If I can get 3-4 bar signal sometimes, why can't I get signal like that all the time? Why do the signal drops correlate with what coincides with heavy peak traffic hours? It seems like you guys can't handle all the traffic from your clients, and then drop signal strength at the tower to compensate? Why is the signal strength the best during the hours of 00h00 - 06h00, when very few people use the internet? I want to use the internet when I want to do so, not when you want me to do so!

2. Apart from the signal strength, why does the the disconnects happen at least once a minute on certain days, then have one day without it? When I connect on the network, the speeds are fine for browsing. It then deteriorates rapidly to the point where no traffic comes in and the connection times out. I then have to disconnect, open another new connection of which the speed is fine again, if only for a minute until all traffic dies again. and then the cycle just keeps repeating itself. If problems like these happen all the time, the fault might be on either side, but if there is days that the network works perfectly well, the fault surely must be with the tower or your network?

My signal has been at 1 bar now for the past week, making anything other than browsing near impossible. I can't get the modem any higher or nearer the tower, so if things don't improve to what it was like when I joined Screamer, I will have to cancel my subs.

Hi Winston

Please PM me your account no as it is a very simple matter fpr our techies to identify where your issues are occuring on the network.

Sent via PM. Though I doubt the matter is as simple as you make it out, because if that was the case then your techies should have addressed the problem or given me the feedback they never did on the numerous occasions that I phoned your helplines to report this problem. The reply is always the same: "we're looking into it", "we'll let you know" or my personal favorite "we're going to send someone to the tower and do a full inspection, will get back to you with some feedback". Still waiting.

@Winston Wolf

Just got a call from Screamer - apparently they are getting some equipment tomorrow which they plan to add to the tower to improve signal, which should boost your signal too. Desmond also mentioned that they are planning on moving the tower. I really hope the situation improves, because my only issue with screamer at the moment is the poor quality of my connection. Holding thumbs I will see some improvement over the next few weeks.

Edit: I am having the exact same issues with speed being fine then dropping off in a few minutes to an unusable connection. Haven't noticed the speed spikes after midnight, but I haven't been monitoring them. I also have stretches of time where everything seems ok (even to the point that playing games online seems like it should be feasible) but they seem to be occuring less frequently lately. It definitely seems to be an area related issue.

The issues you are having are restricted to certain areas covered by the Edenvale tower and this is being moved and additional equipment added to it. Hopefully this will be completed within a week.

Been raiding the last few weeks on screamer and it has been a pleasure. Previously on fights where spells were spamming all over the place, I would always d/c on my adsl, its a nice change to actually not gimp the raid by being in the WoW menu while the rest of the raid fights.

Internet speeds and latency been superb since the tower connection has been restored.
@Howzit: Are there any price cuts coming our way in the near future?

Yep my connection has been solid and WOW latencies sub 200.
Just pinged Hetzner.co.za and vodacom.co.za and latencies also below 50 so Screamer must have quickly overcome the "no cost peering" debacle between MWEB and the bastard big telcos. (MTN, VODACOM)

Also getting less than 29ms on those sites.

My connection died at 21:01 last night, only came back 20 minutes later :(

Does anyone know what the impact would be price-wise with this whole peering move? I understand what it means if every isp jumps onboard, but how much would this impact pricing on local bandwidth? As far as I understand if the ISP doesn't pay for local connectivity we as end-user will also not be paying or at least a substantially lower premium. And what is screamers plan or approach to this new development?

FYI: I'm loving this idea! THANK YOU MWEB

Still disconnecting like mad and getting lots of timeouts. Howzit help me!
