SEACOM construction finished!

Let's see if the government can keep their hands off...

The government might try to interfere... but they can't get their hands on it. Seacom is an international consortium of companies and the physical cable lies outside the borders of South Africa... it only comes onto the beach at Mtinzini. No, the government made their best bid through the late Ivy's failed policies, but she even managed to bungle that up and now the market has been thrown wide open. There is not much they can do to stop it, they can only bog it down with pointless legislation and delay its influence through ineptitude.

but arent all the ADSL users in South Africa already in some form of a club... and don't we already use consumer action to vote for our favourite ISPs?

Don't get me wrong, I am all for consumer action... but I already left M-web because of their prices... and I assumer that thousands of others will follow.

What is the point of staying with an ISP when their prices are inflated and they treat their customers like the underside of a shoe? See my signature... I already told Mweb what I think of them.

Instead of bothering with all the admin and forming a club, etc. Those thousand users should have already made their move and their intentions felt. There is no reason to stay with Mweb or to try and convince them to drop their prices... just move already and they WILL have to drop their prices.

Edit: If people have not already moved away from Mweb because of their prices, then we must assume that there is something else keeping them at Mweb. Their customer service, or their web portal or their loyalty to the brand, etc. Forming a club is not going to help fighting those loyalties. The only thing that talks is money/price.... and if Mweb has to die like a dinosaur... so be it.
I get your points Gary.
Your reasoning is simple, you rely on the fact that the existing ISP's are actually competing with each other.
How sure are you of that fact?

Perhaps the time has come for us, as consumers, to look at cutting through the middle-men rabble and gunning straight for the throat of the problem.

For example: The cheapest ADSL provider out there currently is Telkom's reseller plan.

Why on earth must we deal with ISP's at all?

Then you get people like my parents, who despite being advised not to go with mweb, didn't want to lose their email address. They've also used Mweb since Mweb bought out PIX way back when.

Why don't you migrate them.

1. Get Gmail account.
2. Get Gmail servers to collect mail from MTN POP
3. Setup email client to use Gmail POP/IMAP
4. Cancel MWEB ISP BUT keep the email address for a small monthly fee.
4. Tell parents to give out new gmail address to new people the meet.
5. Update the email address on sites like banking and places that send you electronic accounts.

With the above setup all mail they send will originate from gmail and which senders will then reply to. After a short while you will basically receive no more mail in the mweb pop and you can cancel that address. Also say goodbye to spam & crap.

I will never in my life again use an email address tied to an ISP.
