Seacom launch delayed

sigh....so they couldnt make their dead line, no need to blame it on the pirates, besides they said the cable already landed long time ago so whats that got to do with the pirates????????

Put Julius Malema on the ship, he can just threaten the pirates with miltant action

SEACOM should be commended for the transparency they have displayed throughout the project.

So what you're saying is, if we're not use to great customer service, and we get some form of mediocare customer service BETTER than we already receiving but still nothing like the rest of the world has, that we should be happy?

**** that

I beat they had access to " Executive Outcomes Marine section " Then there would be no delay. !!

lol, you know i dont get this...the lines landed long ago, that means the ships had already finished putting the piping under the sea, so the question that should be raised is........what on earth do the pirates have to do with anything under the sea....as they go after boats, not piping several k's under the deep blue sea, so lets just assume the fact that someone could have screwed up some calculations in seacom, and that now they are strugling to get it right to get the speed they wanted, or maybe someone hasnt paid the builders;) lol

How will Seacom guarantee 100% service availability in future if the link off the Somalian coast is already under threat?

--"oh shyte! we wont be able to make our deadline for launch, what do we do!"
**"err... well... what 'bout the pirates?.."
--"The Pirates???"
**"yeah the pirates of Somalia."
--"YES! that's it! lets just blame it on the bloody pirates! hahaha! brilliant, no one will know!"

You have to read behind the PR fluff! The pirates were busy in May but the date stayed the same at the time. Seacom may have known there was going to be a delay some time ago, but they probably decided to bask in the limelight for a while longer, and also to consolidate all the delays into one announcement.

I already said there would be delays and my money is on more to come.

Also - if the Kenya - SA link is already complete and tested then when will that be switched on?

sheesh, would you guys just go to the freaking Seacom site and read the press release. The delay is because they are still busy splicing part of the cable that goes to Mumbai in that area RIGHT NOW as we speak! There is nothing sinister about it. Just plain safety issues.

Does anyone know the actual cost of delivery TO South Africa

Everyone thinks that the ISP or carrier is going to rip them off on the new seacom cable

but no one knows the facts

facts are

A STM1 155mbps cost are Arround $ 100000+ per month depending on forword commitments

that works out to arround $ 700 per meg
then you must add on peering traffic in london etc ,because no one wants SA traffic no one wants to peer for free so add another $ 90-100 per meg for that

then add all the infrastructure costs arround setting up a mpls network of there own to carry QOS traffic like voip to london etc

the other problem is that the south african market might no be able to purchase all the 155 mbps in the first 6-9 months so the carrier must make a loss on the line as he has to pay the full price if they have sold it or not

just the basic facts

Seacom pricing

The other fact i have excluded is the resillience factor

If there is a fiber cut it takes arround 2-3 weeks depending where the Repair Ship is etc

to backup a seacom STM1 you will require either a STM1 feed from telkom via SAT3 or You will have to have a satellite feed

a STM1 feed via satellite requires a full transponder and this cost is in excess of $ 200000 per month just hanging arround idle to backup the Seacom add all the costs up now and see that the 1 meg you want to buy is now costing now over $ 2000 to deliver at 1:1 with qos

Frustrating. Don't think Telkom has much of a hand in this one, doubt they can lean on an independant body like Seacom to delay until they're ready, like they could other government-backed shams like Neotel and the like. I did think though that the cable was already down, hopefully this is the last piece they need to plough!

Geez they haven't even started operating here yet and the potential for "stolen cable" is already hampering them. Poor buggers. Still chins up, this alternative will come along sooner or later.
