Prices will come down! It is impossible to stop prices from coming down. Mr Biggs and Co can watch and weep. This time, the human propensity for greed is on our side. There is absolutely no limit to the lengths people would go just to make money. If the big ISP's were to try to stay expensive, a plethora of small ISP's would rise up just to fill the void. Unless Telkom increases the line rental by a huge factor, prices will go down. I predict that on the 4th of July (today is June the 4th), I will get 2 times my 3G bandwidth for the same price and 3 times my adsl bandwidth for the same price. And that is just the beginning.

I don't know where you get your information, but those are very specific and optimistic predictions you are making there. I certainly hope that they come true for us all, but it almost sounds like you have some insider information. Is this the case?

let me ask you, if you had always paid X amount for Y amount of bandwidth, and suddenly you can get it for 10% of the original price you will not make your products cheaper? even if that meant that you will grow with more users?

you telling me that you will do the same as iBurst, and then lose all your customers to other providers that DO charge a bit less?

You WILL lower prices when you start losing revenue due to more and more users leaving you behind.

Only one company needs to realize this (and i'm sure many have, already)

If we are to believe iBurst then Seacom may as well cut up the cable and sell it as skipping rope after 2010.

I understand that bandwidth is a small percentage of overall ISP cost but hell if you are getting something for 10% of what you previously paid, eat half the cake (increased profits) and give the rest of the savings to us i.e. increase cap x five fold.

And PLEASE everyone stop blaming Seacom they are the good guys it's the ISP's that have to deliver.

Thats not a very good comparison... the average vehicle on the road in the world today is 8 years old or so. That means that at any given time the customer base of a brand for second hand cars FAR exceeds any financial years new vehicle sales. Decreasing a car's selling price has a knock on effect for all previously purchased vehicles and pisses off a far greater percentage of vehicle owners than the 12.5% that bought a car this year... think about Chrysler and GM (Mostly Chrysler) look at the discounts (R100K+) being pushed through to move inventory now that they have filed for chapter 11... i bet the second hand prices for Dodges etc PLUMMETED when those discounts hit the market.

Honestly speaking - I guess we will see a small change by Septemeber. That is if things will chage at all.

I am using Amobia.com and currently topping up at R89 per GB. My guess is that in Septemeber they will lower the price to R69 per GB. Vodacom's standard OOB data rate might also drop to perhaps R1.50 around the same time. However they are more likely to leave the OOB at R2.00 and focus on bigger bundles for the same money, so you might get 2GB for R189 instead of R289.

The more I think about this the more sick I am getting for all the false hope that we were fed. I should have puked it all up from the word go....

Seacom hasn't even started yet and you are already negative.

Don't believe what iBurst is saying - If they say prices will remain the same then tuff cookie for them - we'll find ISPs that will, iBurst Problems are their problems, not mine.

Wait till a few good deals come up, and watch the action.

One thing no-one seems to be touching on in all these Seacom threads is possible speed improvements. Seacom’s Brian Herlihy touched on it when he mentioned that with decent bandwidth capacity, we would, for example, “not wait for youtube videos to buffer”. Everyone is banging on about wanting caps increased and prices decreased, but for me the single most exciting thing to look forward to is speed increases and an accompanying drop in latencies. Am I naïve in hoping that, once Seacom’s effects are eventually felt, pages will load faster, youtube vids will indeed not have to buffer (at least, not as much) and our general internet experience will speed up somewhat? It doesn’t really bother me if prices stay much the same, as long as everything gets faster. Even just getting a 1 mbps line instead of my pathetic 384 would be a major bonus.

With small Caps I like the youtube video to buffer, so I can read a few posts about the video and see if it's even worthwhile.....

Fast downloads with same sized caps are gonna be an even worse experience IMO.

You've been an SA internet user too long: You've come to expect, as we all have, internet at the speed of a snail on valium. When I was in Oz at Xmas, browsing a couple of youtube vids on my brothers cable internet connection, trying to find a vid I wanted to show him, I clicked on a link on a page we'd just viewed a video on, and turned over my shoulder to say something to him. Two seconds, max. I looked back at the screen, saw the video load red shadow bar was at the end, and went to click on the link again, thinking the page hadn't loaded. It had. The page we were looking at was the page I'd requested. The vid had loaded, and was waiting to play through. That, my friend, is what the real internet is all about.
