SEACOM price cuts will take time

Another thing that I didn't bring up in my previous post - Besides the complete turnaround and change of attitude to the whole Seacom thing from it going to cause MASSIVE price reductions and speed increases, to well, really, it will have no effect at all...
I remember a couple of years back - similar promises were made about Neotel. Telkom would FINALLY have some competition. Well, no. They don't. Neotel is just another wireless provider and we have enough of those already. Telkom still has the monopoly of fixed-line DSL services. Neotel was said to sure cause huge price reductions in the broadband market and there were sure to be price wars starting up out there. Well, no. It has not happened and we (the consumers) are still being ripped off as ever before. I don't want a wireless connection, due to latency and other issues. I like the stability of an always-on DSL connection. I don't like Telkom, their prices, or their service, but where else do I turn? I was chatting to some chap in Holland online last night and he was b1tching about the speed of his connection - I asked what it was - he had a 10 Mbps line and was not happy with that and thought it was below standard. I was almost embarrassed o tell him that I was using a 384Kbps connection. He was complaining about a 10 Mbps connection, which is higher than anything available in SA. I rest my case.

Oh yes, one last thing: **** you Mr. Briggs.

True. iBurst just want to justify delays in lowering prices/increasing caps.

The only reason why I don't leave iBurst is that line rental and 10GB plus
uncapped yet slow 64kbps would cost way more and I'd be paying much of those fees to Telscum, which for me is immoral. I think giving one cent more
to Telscum is like supporting puppy rape. It's wrong on so many levels.

However, if ADSL b/w prices drop to the level that iBurst no longer offers a competitive product, I'll have to go with the puppies and pay that fee to Telscum - if the overall price is lower.

iBurst will still maintain those users who are clueless as to B/W costs or who can't get ADSL or who prefer the semi-mobile aspect of iBurst (you can take the modem with you, some places don't have ADSL but have iBurst etc). In which case 3G will be interesting.

thats all a bunch of poo. Why is local bandwidth so cheap and international not? its to do with capacity. International should be priced at the same rate as local when this goes live. infact local should fall away entirely cos what would the point be?

iBurst does not differentiate between local and int.

PeterCH, i can't even open my OWN website from iBurst, and thats not even on 64kbs YET

can't even try to download a 2MB Rapidshare file, RS says the connection is just too slow to do anything.

They throttle it so much, that you can't even get what you pay for - I bring my 3G modem to work and use my own money for work-related Downloads, hows that?

Can't wait to see iBurst crash & burn.

I agree wholeheartedly with all the negativity, and even direct personal insults toward the writer of this article... my reason is pretty simple:

Why the f.... hell, should anybody that represents an institution that DOESN'T EVEN PROVIDE BROADBAND be allowed to write on this topic?

I get full speed - with 3 concurrent connections I download at 120KB/sec.

Honestly, iBurst is full 1Mb/sec in my area. Of course single threaded downloads go 30-50KB/sec but if you do multiple connections with a DL manager, you get full 1 Mb/sec (100-120KB/sec).

No problems with opening sites, video conferencing on Skype or YouTube.
 
Translation:The reduction in bandwidth cost will be for the benefit of iBurst, not their subscribers, we will continue to ph@ck our customers up the @rse in order to line our pockets!

Iburst are also useless.
the ADSL providers do so the only justification they can make as to the difference in cost for international would be capacity.

I'm not defending iBurst, just that this is an iBurst rep talking here, for him
local and international cost the same - well priced the same.
If I were to only browse MyADSL on iBurst or ONLY visit Slashdot.org
I still pay the same.
 
At least we know what iBurst is going to do. One less company to choose from if choice ever arrives.

Guess he wants to use the extra money to grow his uber small company, which only feeds off the scrapes of the internet community
 
Option A:
Lower prices, get more users, and benefit from more money coming in, and saving some on Seacom as Well.

Option B:
Keep prices the same, and get more money by keeping ALL of Seacom's savings.

They both will work, but Option B will only last so long, till up to a point where you only have a few hundred users to leech from. Other ISP's using Option A will keep getting more users, and have a constant income.

Being greedy is not gonna make them rich, it is going to be their downfall. mark my words, this is going to happen the way they are doing things lately, and even saying it openly *before* seacom is in use.

like w.m said - 1 less company to worry about.
 
about those other cables that are meant to reduce prices dramatically- take EASSy,
Telkom SA Ltd, a major EASSy stakeholder, has said it may withdraw from the project, as it may be forced to reduce the fees it charges rival operators to use its bandwidth on SAT-3, a cable connecting Portugal and Spain to Melkbosstrand, South Africa, which is co-owned by Telkom and the emergence of Neotel.

companies are actually actively trying to keep prices up even in the face of evidence that prices MUST come down due to simply economics! they want to defy the basics of demand-supply!

Oranges at retail

If I buy oranges from Mr. Scum (only farmer) at 20cent per orange, and sell them to you
at R1.00 (profit plus transport and other costs) and I make say 25cent profit,

AND

along comes Mr. Com, selling me oranges at 2cents per orange, I can surely sell my oranges
for 18Cents cheaper, and still make EXACTELTly the same profit, NO?

Or did I waste my dad's money on an education?

What you are forgetting are all those local supply issues and marketing you have to spend on now to make it known that your oranges are cheaper ;)
