so if the local infrastructure is also a factor in pricing, then we can expect to pay the same rates that we do for local bandwidth at the moment???

Yes, and with iBurst/Vodacom/MTN/all-the-wireless-providers you pay exactly the same for local as international, so he's speaking the truth.
I think SEACOM's going to reshake the landscape from this absurd situation unique to South Africa where wireless is an actual viable competitor to an ADSL line.

If any of ISP's has a need to step up and make a public statement like this one of Mr Bull****ter of IBurst, they have to present their entire costing structure to supstantiate this statment.

Nah, who cares if they can't manage their own costs - If other ISPs are willing to pass some savings to us while saving themselves, we will move to them.
We don't give a **** why they can't provide bigger caps/etc, we will find someone else who will.
Like I said, no need to excuse yourselves, you can leave without making excuses.
If seacom provides 90% cheaper bandwidth and you can't bump up the CAPs, then you are CLEARLY trying to fool us. We have had enough of your pathetic excuses.

Oh this makes me so angry!!! Almosy angry enough to say F this country and pack and go live in a 1st world country somewhere...
I have been closely following the reports and progress on Seacom over the last year or so, and it's quite amusing to watch how the whole story has changed. It has taken a complete 360-degree turnaround in fact. I should have printed each article that has been published over the last couple of years (up to this one) and the put them all into a PowerPoint slideshow, so the world could watch them in "time-laps" mode. It has gone form the introduction of the Seacom cable as the all-time, much needed saviour of the universe for SA DSL consumers to this. It was initially said (and over a fair long period) that we would see MASSIVE reductions in bandwidth costs and greater speeds once Seacom landed. I have watched the articles over the last 6 months or so, gradually and ever so subtly change their tune. Obviously there are some "fat-cats" in the business out there, that have seen that they can bring in this cheap bandwidth, but still continue to sell it to us at ridiculous prices. Our pricing does not drop (or only marginally if it does), but their profits sure increase. I think that there is some collusion between the providers/ISPs out there to keep us in the dark and rip us off for as long as possible. Oh yes, and one last thing - **** you, Mr Briggs.

1) Mr Briggs is and idiot. He clearly has no understanding of how a new international cable with 10x the capacity of the current one will impact the South African broadband market. What exactly is his position at iBurst anyway? Head of Commercial? WTF is that?
2) MyBB journalists SHOULD be posing the questions WE'RE raising to these idiots... instead they copy/paste from some generic email. Look at all the valid points we've raised! any tech journalist with half an active braincell would have asked questions like

"Will this cable impact your 40mb cap options?"

we'll take it down a notch. probably decrease it to 20mb. you see, iBurst is a bubble company, and as we all live in little bubbles, we can't think clearly. we'll be saving an extra 20 rands worth of bandwidth for use when all the 64kbs users bring down our whole network.

Its not just Briggs, Alan Knott-Craig (iBurst CEO) said exactly the same thing a few weeks back. Just as when he was at Vodacom, these guys have a vested interest in keeping prices high. They will charge what the CAN, not what is REASONABLE. Their corporate mission statement should be "K@K and Betaal consumers".

Seacom has not even launched yet... and this is a quote from one more provider... not very well respected in the industry as you can see from the comments here. If you believe this idiot, then that simply confirms my opinion of you.

If Seacom goes live and prices do not go down significantly, as numerous people have said already (including me), I'll just remind of of this...
I'm betting iBurst is gonna face some serious cash issues this time next year, with possible liquidation from all it's customers leaving for MUCH, MUCH better deals.
I can see clearly this company simply just does NOT want to play along anymore.
