SEACOM reveals bandwidth usage on cable

Well with recent developments, i think its clear things might start picking up for seacom.

Create a better/cheaper entry level product. The barrier to entry is still to high for smaller isps.

I agree. We also saw significant price cuts from Telkom on SAT3/SAFE, so things are starting to move in the right direction. Users will demand higher usage limits from their ISPs - or move to another provider - hence ISPs will need more bandwidth and so on...

uncapped unshaped all hours any line speed for R500 per month (or less) is what I want. Simple.

so if Seacom had the money to build a freaking long undersea cable, why didn't they have the money to build an overland cable from Mtinzini to Johannesburg? Why didn't they terminate in a Major city rather? Would have made much more sense and assured them of a bigger customer take up than landing the cable in the bushes somewhere in the Northern KZN coast!

Local regulations?

SEACOM need to think about the situation a little differently. The tier 1 providers do not pass their savings from SEACOM onto smaller providers who deal with them. SEACOM is in a great position to force change by giving smaller players channels to bypass the incumbents, too bad they're not looking in that direction.

We want bandwidth, Seacom wants to give it to us - why won't the Telecoms & ISP's let us?

That is not their business.

We should plug that Seacom cable in the WUG in Durban and get it up here in Jhb, then you will see the fat cats get up off their chairs.

ADSL internet access has come down yes, but we are still paying R550 to Telkom for a 4mbps connection. Vodacom and MTN are still charging the same data rates as they have been since 2006.

IIRC, the cable terminates at the Neotel datacentre in Midrand. Or will shortly.

They will most definitely get up off their chairs... up off their chairs to sue you.

Well SEACOM be proactive instead of bitching; if you can lay underwater, how about overland so we can purchase it?

Do you really think Telkom, Vodacom, MTN, IS and the like would give a competitor a leg up?

Get going and the bandwidth hungry consumer will purchase...

If we use 320g on SAT3 and 100g's on Seacom (with 900 unlit) and there is no demand for more bandwidth, what the hell are we gonna do with another 5tb's coming onshore?

Whats clear is we wont need more cables for 15 years or so.
