Have you got a link for the firmware...? Will the flashing of the firmware work on an external drive?

Silverlight is absolutely correct.

I spend my life recovering data from 7200.11 drives and I say the same thing to my clients over and over again... there is NOTHING wrong with the drive itself, only the firmware. People freak out and go and spend cash on another drive when there really is ZERO need to.

People are selling these things CHEAP second hand, purely because they dont understand what is going on. You can pick up one of these 7200.11 drives nice and cheap, and then flash it and hey presto! :)

This month has been the most busy month in the last 5 months! 16 drives brought out of their busy state and all data recovered!

Divorcing the firmware from the drive hardware is stretching it a bit, from a lay person's perspective.

While what you say is true, the bad taste in the mouth comes from the attitude of Seagate and how they handled the fiasco.

Some people will go off and spend their cash elsewhere.

totally get what you are saying regarding the attitude of Seagate... and totally agree.

Though I think that through their screwup, consumers are actually in the position to score if they play their cards right! :)

A note about the 7200.11 drives: Some 7200.11 drives come with a firmware starting with CC. Those drives are not affected with the firmware issue and should not be flashed with the new replacement firmware otherwise the drive becomes inoperable.

As to this Seagate upgrade page.

After spending an entire afternoon driving around P.E looking for a Samsung/Western Digital 500gb HDD I had to settle for the Seagate. I wouldn't touch a 7200.11 500gb with a ten foot pole but I managed to find a place with the 7200.12 and ended up taking 2.

Has anybody had any issues with them? I'm hoping the firmware issue on the older drives was just a small dent in Seagates rep and that these are back up to standard.

I have heard of .11 issues, but my 500GB .11 has been perfect since I bought it, touch wood.

I got the 7200.12 1tb. Very impressed at how cool it runs. Its amazing, barely even luke warm. It also has a higher areal density than the samsung (it has 2 500gb platters as apposed to 3 smaller platters on the samsung) which makes it quite a bit faster.
