Second IDs to cost you

I fully support the minister in this initiative.

Firstly, there is a cost bound to producing an ID, yet, we're getting it for free.

And yes, people should take better care of their ID documents.

Another point, what about all the unclaimed ID documents laying there; that certainly cost them something to produce - more wasted money.

The R20 for a second ID is probably way less than what it costs to produce the ID in the first place.

This system is fully funded by the South African tax payer.
The fee's that are thrown in are just there to provide some border between abuse and use.

Before you stand up and say that people should take better care of their ID documents, please enlighten me as to how on earth a shack dweller who's home has been burnt to the ground is being negligent.

And, remember now, in order for the shack dweller to pay the money to replace the document, the shack dweller is going to need to get a job, and, to apply for a job, the shack dweller needs to go to the department of labour with an id book.

The bottom line is ... NOBODY WANTS TO GO TO HOME AFFAIRS. NOBODY! It's a minimum of 4 taxi trips when you're already struggling to buy bread.

Lets not even begin to talk about the price of a photograph.

Like I said, a better idea would be to provide incentive for people to hand in found id books.

And that is why it will have the desired effect. Its a bit of a heartless solution though. (If you lose the IDs then no money for buying bread.)

For well off people there is a much more effective incentive in place: Identity theft.

um, as I already said... mine was stolen in a car robbery. You want me to have to pay cos someone else stole it? Even though my taxes already paid for it?

The minister should rather focus her energy on getting the card system going already! the reason id documents get lost, broken etc is because its not convenient to carry around when needed. how many people carry around credit/debit cards without loosing them?(theft is a completely separate matter)

I am very seldom to support anc government but it is the time.

1) no matter what is the reason you lost your ID, you have to take part of the responsibility of the lost.
2) R20 is NOTHING, I hope the price will be increased to R500 (at least)

2) every citizen in SA should have their ID in possession ALL the time. If not, fine.
3) better security systems for SAID, now, it is too easy to make a fraudulent ID.

Because R20 is a fortune if you have no money. R500 is impossible. As for fining you for not having your ID with you, are we going back to the days of the 'pass' and curfews? :wtf::wtf::wtf:

The money for the smartcards has been returned to the National Treasury because of failure to conclude a tender process for the new IDs.

Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma told Parliament yesterday that because of irregularities in the tender process for smartcard IDs - which was handled by the State Information Technology Agency (Sita) - her department had been forced to halt it and to return the money earmarked for the project.

I have seen those tender documents... they have been written whereby ONLY ONE Company could satisfy ALL the requirement. The project started 5 years ago that I know of as I have seen the whole enrolment system (Fingerprints,Face,Biometrics) made by one company that submitted a tender. (but lost the tender due to their Screenshots not looking the same (but similar) to what was put on the RFI documents.

The PILOT program was running but Telkom couldn't keep the diginet lines online (or provide enough bandwidth) which caused the system to run off-line. In my view.. the Tender process was marked as Irregular as Shabir's company didnt win the bid. (Who do you think makes the SA Drivers license cards.. none other that Shabby n Co)
