Secondary Income

My employment contract states that I cannot use any skills that are / could be used in my job to earn extra money. I am more than welcome to invest and such, but not doing actual work

I don't see how that can hold up in court. Within office hours sure, with their equipment sure. But not with your own skills that you are leasing to them during office hours.
 
Not a secondary income yet as I'm not making real money out of it yet, but I have been into share trading for more than a year. I enjoy it and the plan is to build up my portfolio. The plan right now is to do full time share trading when I retire (still a longggg way off).

Yes but government workers have to declare it to their employers, the government (and SARS). Private sector workers only have to declare it to SARS.

Oh, the guys working at the counters at your local branch make a ****load of money? Dude, they're not paid half what even new teachers earn. Everyone needs to conform to compliance regulations, from the tea lady to a company director.

All government workers, not just teachers, have to declare any second income. But it is solely for tax purposes.

The appropriate numbers will then appear and the correct tax deduction will then be made on your monthly pay sheet.

But the fact is, you have to declare it otherwise you'll have some issues with the the various departments.

Still absolutely no reason for you to declare it to your employer.

Tax is your problem not theirs and you should be declaring it to SARS accordingly...not your employer.


But yes this is government and we know how good they are at doing anything as well as the private sector...personally I wouldn't tell them jack ****.

See my sig. It should be a nice little side income when it actually materializes. Plus I should be getting my hands on some 'samples' of the hardware soon which I can do with as I see best. But communication is often difficult as my counterparts are frequently away, and speak poor English. I'm left to my own devices a lot and in a real sense, I am THE local representative of a very respected international brand.

Yep, that reason doesn't make sense to me. What's significantly more likely in my mind, is that there are similar controls as with bank employees, to manage conflict of interest, as government employees may be privy to sensitive information that can be used to gain unfair advantages in for example tender processes.
 
The only reason public workers need to reveal their secondary incomes is to prevent conflict of interest, where I dish out a tender to my cousin whose the director of the company where I hold shares in as well. I see no reason why teachers should be submitted to this and I frankly don't understand how you can be so accepting of it.

Your boss has a say in what you do during office hours, but not what your money does for you during office hours, or what you or your money do after hours.
