Ok, I have a DSL-300t modem, which is not wireless, ie it connect via copper to telkom and blue cable thingy to my 16 port hub.

Now, my question is, can this setup be hacked, ie does changing the admin password matter, if it means that some has to find my ip, login to my modem from somewhere, (the internet?) to use my bandwidth ? sounds pointless to me

They would be able to get your ISP details and use your bandwidth or disable your firewall and hack into your pc.
 
Lets forget the How to do this, for a moment, but if they are on the internet, they would be using their own bandwidth to use up mine. As to firewall, it is behind the modem, protecting the network from hackers, that is the point of a firewall. But lets go back to how to get my isp details, well for a start all that is behind the firewall, see above. So the only "they" can do is find me in the vast internets and then turn off my modem. Way to go.

So why do I need to change my admin password on a non wireless connect to the internets ?
 
Where are your ISP details being stored? On the D-Link?

From the sounds of it the D-Link is your firewall so compromising that means your network security is compromised.

Otherwise they/me/anyone can login to your router remotely and get your isp username and password and use it on their(or if their smart someone else's line).
 
Explain the roll of the server pc, does it share the internet connection or is it a straight DSL modem >> router >>> whatever pc setup?
 
Anyway dsl modems dont usually provide hardware firewalls, checked it out no mention of one.

Remember an internet connection is a two way connection, it the modem goes to a hub, which goes to the rest of the pc's without routing through a server pc with a decent firewall and security, every pc on the network fends for itself in terms of security.

Pretty much a poor setup.

It shares the internet connection, it makes via the hub - DSL modem, with everyone else on the network.

But this is getting a bit far off the op, which was does a non wireless dsl modem really need to worry about admin password changes.
 
as DJ said, YES, they get onto your modem by bypassing the firewall(router firewalls are not that fantastic) they check out what your username and p/w are and they write it down, they punch those details into their router and viola, they are surfing the internet using your bandwidth, it is a crime and some ppl have been bust for it, but rather avoid the whole thing altogether.
 
Your DSL Router is establishing the PPPoE connection yes? Or just a pure bridging modem

is a really really silly thing to do.

Maybe you won't be a targeted user.

Chances are some 12year old would scan through your ISP's IP range. Log into your router and surreptuously copy your username and password. ( all this would use less than a meg of _his_ cap ). Disconnect. Put your username and password in his PPPoE connection and surf happily while you smile sure in the fact that nobody would be interested in spending their own precious internet cap to steal 100's of times more cap than they spend ;)
