I'm thinking about getting my own website but I know very little about the pros and cons.

My needs are pretty minimal. I work freelance, offering a specialist service. New clients usually reach me through word-of-mouth recommendations from other clients, but it would help in various ways to have a "????.co.za" address where people could also find me (mostly that would be via LinkedIn). The website would have an occasional blog maybe, plus details of my services, plus some way for people to contact me that wouldn't expose an email address to spammers. And I also have a very small Excel calculator that I want to make available to other people in my particular line of work (as a free download - I have no intention of using the website for any kind of ecommerce).

I also want to keep costs to an absolute minimum.

Where would be a good place for me to find really basic guidelines on this?

My present ISP offers various hosting packages and I notice, for example, that Linux hosting is much cheaper than Windows hosting. For a minimal website are there any reasons why I might want to go with Windows? That's the sort of thing I don't know about. Also, "storage space": what does this cover? What would use up storage space?

Anyone who could shed some light on my ignorance?

you dont need windows, unless you plan on developing a website or web app that specifically requires windows/aspnet/mvc components.. for a basic website in html or php you will be fine on linux and better off, especially if its on cPanel..

storage space would be used by mail, if you use imap/webmail as well as web content.. so if you have a crap load of images a couple megs in size, you will use storage space, same for videos and music and a crap load of documents megs in size..

Thanks a lot. I think I'm about ready to take the plunge.

I have been hosting on Linux servers for over 15 years now.
I use texo.co.za in the Cape...
