Every time I read these threads I question why I haven't got a firearm for self defense and learned to use it etc...
So to start off I assume I just find a nearby shop and speak to the guy there. Will they help me out through the whole process and also recommend training grounds? Do I start with the license or the firearm or do they facilitate all the paperwork and license for you?
I see you are in JHB so hopefully one of the locals can point you to a good shop up there.
Mine was quick and painless - went to shop (Cityguns) + decided on and paid for firearm which included assistance with motivation.
Did competency training and exam at nearby range - took 1 week to get certificate.
Handed in application with DFO.
SAPS came and inspected safe a few days later.
License approved about 3 months later.
Total time was about 4 months.
NB. A good holster (approx R750-R1000) + premium SD ammo + lots of range ammo + course with reputable trainer is a must so calculate that into initial outlay.
Reloading can save you a fortune so worth looking into that too - feel free to pm me if you want more detail.
Also look at IDPA at local ranges - good way to get some trigger time and will have lots experienced shooters help you get the basics right.
