I know many people who have had success with that particular router. Maybe you just got a lemon?

Netgear DG834
Firmware V3.01.31
ADSL Firmware Version 6.01.00.12

I have not had one single issue with this router. It's basically a mini Linux box anyway. Half the time I forget where it is. Have never had to reboot it or do tweaking, it just works. Solid features, lovely build quality. The cat has lovingly used it as a pillow, knocking it over twice and it still goes.
