So guys. Im having a real hard time here.
Situation - 30 pc`s on a domain, 1 server
We upgraded the server and decided to format / reinstall server 2003.

Problems - client pc`s can ping server, but cant be added to domain
server cant ping clients, clients cant ping each other.

Any ideas? Help!!

OH - everything was working fine before we reinstalled the server 2003.

Just to confirm, how are the clients receiving their IP's?

Is the firewall enabled on the server?

Was their a domain on the previous server and where the clients joined to it?

yes there was a previous domain with the same name. Clients getting the ips`s automatically via dhcp from server. Firewall is off

have you removed all the clients from the previous domain? (join them back to workgroup ---> Then add to new domain)

no i havnt. i tried removing a few then adding it again, but i get a "domain controller or domain cannot be contacted" error

most likely a DNS issue, check the run a IPCONFIG /ALL in cmd prompt confirm the settings are correct, then run a IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS. Make sure the machine is part of a workgroup.

Restart and try add the machine to the new domain.

did all that now. Still getting a domain controller for domain could not be found.
In the details - error_timeout

can you ping the server by name and ip, if you run a ping -a to the server does it return the correct Name?

Firstly can you ping your default gateway from server and from pc's
Do you see active leases on the dhcp server? also once you get the server and pc's talking you will need to rejoin every pc to the new domain.

yes i can ping the server by name and by ip, but the server cannot ping the clients

Yeah, check the DHCP Leases.

As a test, set a static ip on two of the machines and try ping eachother and the server. with no gateway set.

To remove the computers from the domain you would need to have the old server still present. Failing that you would need to use the local admin account on the computers to put it in workgroup first then join the new domain.

yes i have run the DC setup.
I configured 2 pcs with static ip`s. Both can ping the server, but cant ping each other. Server cant ping then as well

Try killing the firewall on one or two of the xp boxes, see what happens.
And you should be able to remove the clients from the domain even if the old dc is gone, by using the local admin account on each workstation.

I put some off it in a workgroup, but cant add it back to the domain afterward

OK! i turned off the firewall on a xp box and the server could ping it - so could the other pc`s as well, but still cant add it to the domain
Does this mean that i need to disable the firewall on all the pc`s?

9/10 times thats DNS, where you getting your DNS from? Is it working properly, maybe flushdns several times on a client and see?
Try adding your DC into your hosts file on one of your workstations, see if that helps at all?
