Yeah i know the time/date thing is wrong. anyways it just won't connect till i push connect under advance->PPP . Wierd. I notice i also can't log into saix userstats sometimes it gives me a authentication failure thing.

Yeah I guess a 3:30-4:30am time window is probably best for most people. But being able to choose would be a nice feature.

eg thinking along the lines of
<1GB and below 6 hour
>1GB 24 hour
Any progress on these fronts?
See sessions still time out every 12 hours at about 12am and 12pm.

mine shows about 8hrs.. though i disonnect manually just to be sure i don't drop when downloading 50MB cause i can't afford a broken download :( Oh well I only download like on week-end. Anyways busy managing my cap so i am a bit under the cap come end of month.

Guys, I dont know but this 3hourly reset as instituted by some ISP is so irritating.
Mirc reconnects and everything else, and causes such a hassle.
I mean once in 24 hours is ok, but evry 3 hours is ridiculouse.
Daveogg i second your notion there must be another way.
I understand that these are tactics implemented by Telkom, but really it's taking things too far.

3 hourly disco sets reco-nection resets.... bleh pfft like whatver
i mean what happened to 24/7 internet, we are going backwards..
ISDN here i come, i mean i may as well just dialup and disconnect when i am done, because a 3 hour reset impacts so much that it adds more injury to the agony we are already feeling, with hard capping, shaping, top-up and high costs of bandwidth/ low cap size that it really makes adsl NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!!!

yeah when it was 2hrs.. it sucked big time cause downloads crash etc esp with axxess having other problems with auth at the time. Man this month i am an expert at account for almost every bit/byte incomming and outgoing saying things like hrm should i download that update/software cause you know we 'could do without it/old version' till nxt month or 'get ABCD to download xy & z' and 'Lets share bandwidth costs and you get 1/2 the files we want'

We open to suggestions though at this stage. There needs to be clear policy from all ISP's on this issue as I believe its going to come up more often.

1) Who is responsible for overages?
2) What is your disconnection policy?

We are looking at adding a "flag" per client that allows us to keep it at 24hour disconnects (the maximum) regardless for responsible users.

Now I like the sound of that:).... where my flag?
CTF?

Problems with Axxess

I have sent the following email to Axxess's feedback email. I will let you know what their reply is.

Hi,

I recently(Mid Oct2005) signed with Axxess ADSL unshaped 4G. My account name is xxxxxx
I play online games regularly. Every night in fact. I used to be on Telkom 3G shaped. When I play certain games on servers located overseas my latency has been horrendous. The price of the Telkom product was also high considering the lack of flexibility.

I was referred to Axxess by friends who advised that you offered competitive unshaped products, had an excellent customer services record, and you where 'gamer friendly'. I don’t even do lots of downloads other than maintain Windows XP updates and Norton antivirus updates. Well I am now very disappointed

The recent authentication problems have not been handled very well by you. I have heard that this occurred because Telkom commissioned new DNS servers and decommissioned others and your infrastructure was not adapted to this. These authentication problems appear unique to Axxess. Is this true ? What are your comments on this ?

I have also discovered through friends that you disconnect your customers every 6 hours to see if they are over cap. I also read on MyAdsl that according to Telkom this is not necessary as the usage can be monitored without disconnecting us. What are your comments ?

If you are disconnecting every 6 hours then I consider this to be unacceptable. Please comment on this. 24hours seems to be the norm in South Africa. I think even that is an insult.

My initial set up of my axxess email for myself and my wife did not go smoothly either. I had to phone each time and wait for your techie to do his thing before the email was working. Now that was not a big deal at the time and the issue was quickly resolved, but If I have to phone your techie's every week, then I have to start wondering. I have tried to phone you twice over the last few days regarding the connection problems, but I only get the voice mail saying '…the uplink provider….'

In summary, I need an ISP which can :
1. Offer more flexibility with regard to capping. I.e. If I go over cap, instead of cutting me off, bill me for the extra usage. If I go over cap it is my decision. I am an adult. I can take that decision and accept the consequences for it. You do not have to take that decision for me. If I don't pay. Cut me off, sue me, etc..
2. Stop disconnecting me in the middle of a game just to see what my usage is.
3. Have a real live person answer the telephone who is sitting in front of a PC who can solve my problem.

Is Axxess that ISP or should I be looking elsewhere ?

During the last few days you have achieved the distinction of being trashed on MyADSL more than Telkom. You used to participate on those forums. Why the silence ? There is also no mention on your website of the problems and what actions you are taking to resolve them. In the absence of any communication from Axxess, all I have to go on is what is being said about you by your other customers, which is not good at all.

Please advise.

*COUGH* IMAGINET *COUGH* :D ;)

lol

Have to agree with BeeTee

Imaginet is called "The gamers ISP" for a reason ... :)
24hour resets, excellent service, no disconnect after cap
And they match your requirements 100%

Negative

I left Axxess and went to Imaginet for all the reasons above. I now only get reset every 24 hours, and if I go over my cap for whatever reason, I just pay for the amount I go over.

Great solution!

Axxess replied to my email

Axxess has replied to my email regarding the authentication issues as well as the session disconnects. Their reply is in []'s
I am not happy about the reconnects(every 8 hours not 6) In my view this was not made clear. When I moved to Axxess I assumed the usual 24hr reset.

The text is below :

Thanks for your reply to mail.

Note that my first paragraph actually referred to the horrendous latency I got when I was on Telkom 3G shaped. This is why I moved to Axxess. apologies if that was not clear.

[All SAIX ADSL resellers are affected as we all get the same bandwidth allocated to our customers. We have no control over that. If you could send me a screenshot of the ping times as well as your ADSL line number, I can log a fault/query with SAIX to look into.]

I was referred to Axxess by friends who advised that you offered competitive unshaped products, had an excellent customer services record, and you where 'gamer friendly'. I don’t even do lots of downloads other than maintain Windows XP updates and Norton antivirus updates. Well I am now very disappointed

[When a ISP has a very large customer base, it's impossible to phone each customer personally. Plus sending out emails to users that can't connect to the internet in the first place does also not make any sense. We are looking into avenues to supply customers with QOS messages like SMS etc.]

I have heard that this occurred because Telkom commissioned new DNS servers and decommissioned others and your infrastructure was not adapted to this.
[Incorrect, there was communication problem with some of our radius servers and the ones at SAIX. This was rectified when we found the fault.]
These authentication problems appear unique to Axxess. Is this true ? What are your comments on this ?
[Yes, unique to Axxess. But the power blackout in Cape Town(Friday) did not make finding the fault any easier as some of the other resellers with their own radius servers showed similar errors.]

I have also discovered through friends that you disconnect your customers every 6 hours to see if they are over cap. I also read on MyAdsl that according to Telkom this is not necessary as the usage can be monitored without disconnecting us. What are your comments ?
[We time-out on 8hours and not 6. And no we can't monitor without disconnecting as it all goes via SAIX.]

If you are disconnecting every 6 hours then I consider this to be unacceptable. Please comment on this. 24hours seems to be the norm in South Africa. I think even that is an insult.
[On the new billing system from SAIX it's very hard for any ISP that does their own authentication to offer 24hours.]

My initial set up of my axxess email for myself and my wife did not go smoothly either. I had to phone each time and wait for your techie to do his thing before the email was working. [We have got multiple incoming phone lines. When all our staff are busy on the phone some people get put through to the message system. That can't be helped. If you have any idea's regarding this then please let us know.]

Thanks

yah so i lost another 30 MB today due to timeout of session.. that makes my tally for timeouts this month about 50 - 70MB. (3 times) considering i have to budget every last byte this kinda pisses me off.

I have a download account at www.usenext.com and every byte I download gets subtracted from my current account and if the remaining total drops to zero I get a message to recharge the account. Why can't ISP's use this, as I understand all my downloads and uploads get channelled through the ISP?

 I was with Axxess prior to November .. if they were to be my ISP now I would tell them where to get off... lmao at timeouts every 2 hours .... work with us Axxess NOT gainst us ... or else you will join the morons category ...

HellTel .. they changed to 8hrs soon after everyone complained. That i was impressed about though.
