Session timeouts

We have instituted a similar policy on our side, based on how much available bandwidth you have left.

< 2GB - session timeouts are limited to 3 hours.
2-2.999GB - session timeouts are limited to 6 hours.
>= 3GB - session timeouts are limited to 24 hours.

This policy was instituted for the same reasons that were indicated above, namely it becomes increasingly more of a risk the closer people get to their cap that they will "overshoot", meaning we have to absorb the cost for that additional usage.

We have implemented similair timeouts - these are experimental at this stage - we'll need to tweak them as we get on.

SAOL timeouts:
<= 1 Gig Remaining [3 Hours]
<= 2 Gig Remaining [6 Hours]
<= 3 Gig Remaining [12 Hours]
> 3 Gig Remaining [24 Hours]

This is an unfortunate but necessary policy to protect ourselves - even with the timeouts we already have some users who have used more than their allocation so it's a very real problem.

Only other solution is to hold the client responsible for any over-usage ( Not really an option - ADSL clients have put up with enough already IMO )

We open to suggestions though at this stage. There needs to be clear policy from all ISP's on this issue as I believe its going to come up more often.

1) Who is responsible for overages?
2) What is your disconnection policy?

We are looking at adding a "flag" per client that allows us to keep it at 24hour disconnects (the maximum) regardless for responsible users.

hrm haven't dropped since 2pm. Thats why i made a topic just for that yet no response from anyone. Anyways if only there was a rate at which they'd charge even per 100MB over or something that'd be fine.(though not at a profit since this is just to cover isp from taking the charge)

Ok that's a better idea - link the number of disconnects [to update usage stats] to the amount of data transfer left as of the last time that data usage was updated - as the available data to be transferred decreases, increase the number of disconnects to update usage...customers will not be happy, but maybe there is a way for ISPs [such as WA] to look at the history of usage - time of day that customers normally use their connections the most, and as much as possible employ some fuzzy logic that tries not to disconnect customers when they rely on the connection the most - it would take time to implement & could be complicated - maybe there is a simpler solution that gives the customer more control over when disconnects will take place...

Yeah I guess a 3:30-4:30am time window is probably best for most people. But being able to choose would be a nice feature.

Also, have Web Africa [specifically] lodged a formal complaint with e-DoCasa [ICASA] about Telkodemonopoly forcing ISPs to disconnect every customer's connection in order to update data usage stats?

Yes

Jus for interest sake, IS offer 24 hour disconnects. which can sometimes extend to 36 hours. Now thats cool!

Woohoo IS !!!!

I think its absolute bull**** that the ISPS have to dissconnect a user before they can see how much bandwidth he has used so far!

I play alot of games online (Warcraft3) and if I'm going to be dissconnected every 2 hours it will make it very hard to play online.

Even downloading a file that is larger than a few MB will become difficult.
Just think of the amount of bandwitdh that is going to be wasted with unsuccsesfull downloads because users are dissconnected at 87% of the download!:mad:

Is there no way for the ISPS to see ho much bandwidth is used without having to dissconnect a user first? :confused:

Oober, nope, there is no way (at this time) that we can get any kind of real-time statistics. We only get them once you disconnect, hence the necessity. If we didn't need to we wouldn't have to disconnect anyone at all until they hit their cap.

WApeeps could you not implement a system whereby when one signs up we are given the option of paying for any excess used or having it taken from the next bundle and thereby maintaining the 24hr reset.

Axxess will be changing thier resets to every 6 hour from today. Not great, but better than every 2 hours.

I'm just curious how does the current setup work?
And what would have to be done to impliment a system where one can get live statistics?

I must say, I find this whole situation classic.

ICASA finds that connection resets every 24 hours are bad.
Telkom implements hardcapping and ISP per gig billing, which results in ISPs having to go to 3 hour resets in order to cover themselves.

Its like everything is going backwards in this place.

I wonder if telkom aren't responsible for it if its their system that can't calculate properly. Anyways 4hrs last i saw 6hrs is ok too. the 2hrs was annoying. for some strange reason axxess authentication fails everynow and then after i get disconnected and i only notice when i wanna use it and its not working. The log says authentication failure.. like a whole log on d-link 504t then i just push connect and bam its connected again though if its having problems i have to 1st change the username/pwd to guest and then back to mine to connect.. wierd. sort of like either sessions are set to 1 or something.

Mmmmmmmm

Glad i kept my imaginet account :)

Why dont u webafrica guys also offer a freestyle-like offer ?
Would eliminate this problem ....

Then i could have 2 "uncapped" accounts :/

Man this situation blows

I think some kind of automatic top up option would be nice. If we select auto top up then you give us 24 hour resets and bill our credit cards in the per gig increment we selected up to a maximum number of gigs per month (set by client).
