Set-top box option

Another report to confuse the public *yawn*

An entry-level digital television, the 48cm Hisense, retails at Hi-Fi Corporation for R3 000

It does? Funny, Hi-Fi corp doesn't seem to know anything about it. There is one there for 3 grand but it aint digital.

It could cost consumers anywhere between R210 and R3 000 to join the digital TV revolution in South Africa.
An entry-level box converter will retail for R700
If the entry-level costs R700, what do you get for R210?

The R490 from "the government" actually comes from us poor tax payers.
R3000 for a HiSense TV? That's almost as bad as a no name brand. Oh wait, it is a no name brand...

R3000 for a 48cm TV???

Maybe its an LCD. I'd rather have my 74cm CRT Samsung in that case.

I don't care what it is. I only buy LG, Samsung, Sony, etc....

Expect to pay premium for a TV with a digital tuner. Retailers like to "spyker" SA buyers with "new technology" - see if you can find a iPhone for R1600 ($199) in this country...

but what I don't get is that if these "poorest" households who owns television sets can not save...what, R210 in like 2/3 years...then surely they can not afford a tv license...which means they should not have a tv in the first place, and in the second place why must I help them then to pay for the top box/set whatever if SABC is threatening me year after year that if I don't pay my tv license in time I will get a hefty fine or even go to jail...

It says
Expect to pay from R210 to R3 000 for a digital TV set-top box
and then
An entry-level box converter will retail for R700, according to department of communications estimates. An entry-level digital television, the 48cm Hisense, retails at Hi-Fi Corporation for R3 000

There is no way I will pay R3000 for a STB. Or in my case even R200...

I can see myself engaging in a home-brew box that can be DIY for like R200, for those that don't want to spend heaps of cash on a digital TV to watch the odd good program on the ANC propaganda machine.

Here is a DTT decoder from UEC, the makers of the SD PVR & current Single/Xtraview decoder.
http://www.uec-technologies.com/products/DTD400.php

The Single/Xtraview decoder costs R399 and this DTT decoder has the same features as the DSD1110. Wonder if the Government even saw this model - I doubt if UEC would charge more for it than the DSD1110?

hd ready is not a digital tv, i don't remember seing a lcd, plasma, crt being able to receive digital signals for sale!

HD Ready means that it can display what some call "HD" - aka 720 lines.

Full HD, as the tag implies, is real High Definition with 1080 lines - pretty much what we are used to on quality computer displays.

Regardsless of the screen dimensions the TVs can have numerous inputs as well as different tuner circuits like analog (PAL / SECAM / NTSC) or digital (DVB / ATSC).

Oh damnit... we're gonna get into this argument again...

720p IS HD... its just a different standard to 1080p... but they're both HD.

As for digital TV's, I have yet to see a tv sold with a digital tuner in this country.

720p might be HD for most, but with my superior razor shape eye sight it is too close to 576i - therefore I personally only consider 1080 to be high definition.

My neighbour gets SABC and E-TV on his DSTV decoder (he switched off DSTV, but requested that they leave SABC and E-TV on). So, if you buy a DSTV decoder, a satellite dish and the necessary cable, all in all that will work out to less (for digital TV) than the SABC/ANC/Government offering? And most TV's can take the RCA video signal from the current DSTV decoders...

I smell a rat. Someone is gonna coin it from this *scam*
