Setting up a Belkin wifi modem for dummies

Good day ladies and gents

Im a noob here but have been lurking around for a while now. This is a great forum and certainly one of the most comprehensive I've ever seen.

I need some help setting up my belkin wifi modem. I have finally got my line installed and connected (1 month wait seems to be the norm). I am by no means a competent IT fundi so I ask the experts.

A friend gave me a Belkin wifi modem (apparently a Meneer valued at about R3K, not to sure on the model though) and I dont have the first clue on setting it up. I followed his instruction of typing the 192.168.2.1 IP address on my computers web browser and followed the wizard. I managed to get a wireless, password protected network up an running and even logged on with my iPad. However, no internet connection. I entered my user name and password as provided by my ISP. Do I need a user name and password from Telkom as well?

I read on this forum that one needs an IP address for your pots filtre. eh? Where would I get that from?

I look forward to your responses, preferably in lay-mans terms

Click PPPoE

Enter your username, password and retype password
IP assigned by ISP - YES
VPI/VCI - 8/35
Encapsulation - LLC
MTU - 1454

You don't say whether you can in fact connect to the internet at all?

edit: to clarify, I mean is your ADSL actually active on the line?

Hi Skips192
When you log in to the configuration you may see details of the model there.
As grav80 said check to see if the ADSL is active. You can also approach Telkom. I have found their staff quite knowledgeable on setting up the modem but it is likely they will want to know the model number.

Login to the router:

Fluke; The defualt settings were VPI/VCI - 8/38
LLC
MTU - 1432

I canged it as you suggested and it works! Thank you very much.

I was fiddling around a bit last night and it also works if i use the default MTU of 1432. Is that normal?


I must comment that the internet speed is very slow and im not very impressed at all! I have a 2meg line and a 3geg capped account with axxess (low to start off with). Web pages load very slowly and youtube videos take forever to buffer - i would go so far as to say that it is on par with mtn Edge on my iPad. Could it be a setting that is incorrect on my modem or is it one of those "it either works or it doesn't"? Are all wifi modems created equally?
The connection is also very slow with my laptop hardwired into the modem.

FYI the model number is FSD9630-4.

The Belkin gives the following report:
