Bad weather causes flight delays at OR Tambo

Cape Town - OR Tambo International Airport is experiencing delays on inbound and outbound flights due to adverse weather conditions and low visibility, Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) confirmed.
"This has also resulted in some flights being diverted. In the interest of passenger safety, we request understanding and co-operation during this time. Passengers are encouraged to contact their respective airlines for an update on their flights," Acsa said.
SAA confirmed to Traveller24 it was experiencing some delays, impacting the arrival and departures of certain flights.
"Due to inclement weather, SAA decided to divert eight flights to other airports in the country and to one neighbouring SADC country," SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said.
According to the airline, three domestic flights from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban have had to be diverted. Five regional flights from Windhoek, Victoria Falls, Lilongwe, Livingstone and Lusaka have also been diverted.
"The decision was taken in the interest of safety and SAA apologises for any inconvenience caused by the weather-based diversions," Tlali said.
Earlier on Monday, the South African Weather Service confirmed that extreme thunderstorms could be expected over Gauteng. Forecaster Bransby Bulo told News24 there was a 60% chance of thunder showers, with hail and strong winds expected in the province.
Motorists have since shared pics of an intense hail storm on the N4 between Witbank and Middelburg on social media, following the initial warnings by the SA Weather Service. Rain is also expected in Gauteng, Free State, North West, Limpopo Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal over the next three days, the SA weather service said.
