Blocking it for bandwidth reasons in SA I can understand but blocking it for "productivity" reasons seems narrow-minded.

Yay! I love being system admin. And considering the amount of downloads of software we do every day, Facebook bandwidth (a few GBs versus 100Gb) is negligable. So no, I use it, and it won't be blocked. Disgruntled employees are low on productivity...

I personally think a good networking and social site like Facebook can be positive for company work experience. Especially for folks without proper connections at home. I would recommend a company who can afford the bandwidth to keep the lines open for Facebook. I think YouTube and Google Video can be blocked, no problem, but stuff like

Gmail
Yahoo Mail
Hotmail

and so forth should remain accessible.

Agreed Antowan - I use my work email for people to email me, but gmail if its going to be coming from a machine, list or site. Much easier to filter through all the crap.

As with any http based app, that is easier said than done. Hell knows i have enough problems keeping up with msn and skype on ISA (they can all revert to http port 80 if need be) and their changing application signatures on various versions is a nightmare to block.

Won't be long before there are anonymous re-routers out there pointing to facebook to bamboozel the blocked url on the firewalls.

Probably are a few already by now to overcome the problem i would guess.

Hell you can't even block the app without blocking IE, FireFox or whatever!

Why do you say that? Staff members can waste an extraordinary amount of time on site like that. This time eats significantly into productivity. Staff are generally lazy and will do as little work to accomplish what is required as possible. Hell, even MyAdsl can take quite a bit of time if one does not only focus on specific groups.

I agree with you here. Mail programs, banking sites etc should be fine but the moment you start opening up social networking sites, you are asking for trouble. People can spend more time "surfing" then doing any actual work. Just have a look at what jetpacman said. People can become addicted to these sort of things and they eat time like crazy.

I have seen some staff who will work their butts off only to find I could not give them more then a couple a percentage points of an increase and others who just happily sit around and do nothing and get by with as little as possible. I was probably a bit rough when I said generally but from my experience, the spilt is about 60/40 where 60% is staff that work hard and are proud of what they do and the other 40% eat all of ones time chasing them just to get the smallest things done.

Yes it is a circle, the employers pay as little as possible (and the staff who complain are the ones who get paid better, not the best workers) and there are employees that do as little as possible. The best people are often neglected because they don't complain much and just get on and do things. Also, new staff members more often get paid more then existing ones which is not good.

This is the wrong attitude to have. I have always given 110% when working for a company, often to my own detriment. From that, I get to be proud of what I accomplish.

No, IMO, lazy is not about someone not working efficiently, it's about certain members of staff that always look busy but never accomplish anything of value. They are too busy surfing the internet, sending junk mails and generally buggering around. You ask them form something and they are the ones that never seem to finish it or rely on you chasing them every day to see how far they have gotten. The people who generally work hard are often a little late with something but you can be sure that what they give you is done right.
