Let me also add one other thing. I personally feel that most IT workers are actually quite productive as far as industries go. Sales and Admin staff are generally more tilted towards the other side of the scale.

Just for the record, I prefer to let people get on and do what they need without interruptions or the chasing of those people. I actually don't care if they waste the whole day on Facebook or whatever, provided I get what they committed to do. The problem I have is that there are a lot of people who you cannot just leave to their own devices. These people will use whatever is available (web surfing, smoking, lunch, facebook etc) and just end up dishing up rubbish that even a blind dog can see what done last minute and the day before. I personally don't have the time to run around chasing after these people to see what they have been doing for the last minute/hour/day. These are the ones that a person would like to strip out during the interview phase and the ones that you need to "protect". Unfotunately, they make up a significant portion of office workers and are tough as nails to get rid of. They will happily use up 5GB in a month of internet traffic, spend 2 hours a day on the phone and get away with whatever they can.

Why are they so hard to get rid of?

In the end, blocking facebook will not make them work.
 
FB has been blocked here since day one, as well as other social networking sites, streaming etc etc. Its clearly not business related, and we get tired of people complaining about business sites being slow, so its chop chop to all the abused non work related sites each month.

That is beyond me. They squirm around and if you have a hearing about why the work was not done, they come up with 100 almost plausable reasons. You therefore have to go back to the drawing board and basically monitor them for a couple of months, giving them all of the assistance required by law, making sure that they understand what is required of them. During this time of constant monitoring, they will perform adaquately. So you go back to the start again. The problem with these people is that if you want to get anything out of them, you have to spend a good portion of your time every day watching them.

In the end, blocking facebook will not make them work.

But it is less temptation. Take away all of the distractions and they at least work a bit more.

Wow an IT Admin without an inferiority complex, a rare find indeed.

My IT staff have been instructed to block nothing (I was a bit peeved when they decided to try out a new proxy and blocked some of my favorite sites), and employees are free to use the web for whatever they deem fit (as long as no-one else seeing their screen complains), the only caveat is that they do their jobs and deliver work on time, it's not about filling seats are making up the hours, It's about getting the job done.
 
Block nothing, not even porn/warez sites? So if you catch an employee surfing porn you can't fire them. They can turn around and say because your not practicing due diligence by not blocking dodgy sites you can't fire them, and it would stand up in court too.
 
Should be easy to work around by using an anonymous proxy. Anybody who's blocked try that yet?

people at work tend to not work so much if they to much freedom, like me now typing this i should be working and not reading myadsl :D
 
I block all pr0n sites - they carry a hefty payload besides pr0n...


...and it's not fun reinstalling Windows on a regular basis besides.

There's some things that's better off being blocked.

It comes down to self discipline, Tns.

We're fairly laidback around here, management included, but our work is always done on time, usually before, and to the best of everyone's abilities.

Like others have said, if the work is done, fair play. :)

A happy employee is a productive one. There's a difference between being laid back, and being lazy.

I hear you. I accomplish 100% of what I get paid to do, on time, no fuss and efficiently.

Of course, it isnt my fault I only get paid 70% of my worth.

On the DNS server created a new domain with forward pointer to microsoft.com hehe. Hosts file is quite a sneaky move tho :D

Any kind of masquerading or rerouting will do as long as the traffic isn't coming or going via the firewalls known url or ip that it's set to block.

It uses a browser and cannot be blocked like a regular app - andless you toast all the internet access.
