Well the "Server" needs the dashboard yes, the "client" don't. The Dash creates the connections [3G-only,3G-Preferred etc] under Network Connections. Once it's there, you share it.

Main reasons ive struggled in the past:

1. Firewalls blocking Access [so just turn it off while you are trying to get it to work]

2. IPs not correctly set up. There is a wizard somewhere under network connections to share your connection which will sort your IPs out automatically (you run it on the server Pc and then on each client pc) [generally the server have the IP like 192.168.1.0 , and then all the client PCs must have that IP as their gateways and have an ip like 192.168.1.xx etc]

URGENT: Sharing a 3G connection

Hi, i need a reply asap. Im workig for some japanese guys that need a permanant inet connection for the next 2 months. I thought of using 3G, coz by the time u get a line laid, they will be baq in japan. They all use laptops (about 6 of them). The inet is mainly for email.
I need a way of sharing the connection. I searched the forums and found nothing.
I saw though on vodacoms site "To use the WLAN service a WLAN - enabled laptop is required".
Does this mean if their laptops have a wireless lan card, vodacom has software to handle it?
Im gonna go buy it tommorrow (unless some1 can think of something better), but i dont know much about it. Im very familiar with XP, but ive never networked anyting before.
I was thinking of getting a hub and 6 network cable, and sharing the printer and inet connection (both of which are connected 2 some1s laptop, the guys laptop who is on most of the time). Is this possible?
Any help = ILL LOVE U FOREVA ^_^
Thanks in advance!!
I really need sleep now, but ill check first thing tommorrow before i goto work tommorrow (yes even on saturdays).
Regards!
Mike

Going to bed at 11pm?? Another early night?? :)

I would suggest you get a 3G WiFi access point and connect your 6 laptops to the unit via WiFi. The 3G WiFi router will automatically share all 6 pc's onto one 3G contract.

Look here for more info: http://www.vodacom.co.za/packages/3g/router.jsp

The whole setup is plug and play, you can have all 6 guys working within minutes, without any wires. You don't need to set up a network.

Might be an option (no pun intended!), but the timing's a bit tight. Sounds like the main app is e-mail in which case 3G is more than adequate.

It's exactly this type of application (quick deployment of a number of users) where I see the LittleBox (official name for the router, btw) play a great role.

Six people walks into a room, plonk down 6 laptops and one LittleBox and you're up in running in the time it takes to turn the power on. No more waiting for months for your copper to arrive.

An option is to install a USB GPRS/EDGE modem. Runs at about 140kbps. Should give adequate speeds for emails etc.

Then network the laptops and share the connection.

Another way is to install one of the above modems in each laptop, that way they each have their own connectivity, even at the zoo.(ha ha)

Use prepaid MTN + data bundles cost not too bad, no long term contracts.

Send me PM for more details and assitance re supply and installation

You are quite right, however, 3Gcoverage is quite limited. It seems that you have EDGE where you can get 3G but there is a LOT of EDGE coverage where 3G is not available. Both EDGE and 3G Fall back to GPRS where respective signals are not available.

If the site is in a major center, it's probably covered by 3G. Best to check the map.

Pre-paid data bundles **should** be available Monday, so another option could be to outright buy a data card and a LittleBox and just buy data as needed.

Another feasible avenue might be to talk to some of the retailers who rent out these systems.

thanks for all the help guys ^_^!! I didnt have time to reply this morning as i read then ran outta the door, i should pull off my snooze button X)

11 is uber early for me, im on dial up im used to squeezing all i can outta that R7. Thanks for the welcome IC

The person who was supposed to take me to a vodacom shop didnt have time, so i didnt get to talk them, but a co worker went instead. And said it would cost R250 per a meg!! From my research i found out that 3G is like R2 a meg. Who is right? And is there an initial charge for buying the pci cost (and any other hidden costs)? That router looks like a sweet deal but they only mention 24 month contract options grr!!

I checked the coverage (im working in toyato city right next to the durban airport. Theres so many lil isolated blocks of coverage, and it seems the best coverage is at sea??? Would be perfect if i was on boat.

laters!!

Ok well as IC said data costs 60 - 200cents / mb depending on bundle.
As far as coverage is concerned Durban airport parking lots has full 3G coverage. I would be very surprised if Toyota did not have a decent signal. You could always rent a data card(their is a rental place in durban airport) to check coverage and throughput.

lol wow my typing was disgracefull!!
ive been doing alot of stupid things lately, i blame it on the lack of sleep!!
And working in a toyato plant is not helping, coz ull be standing there, then all of a sudden this robot comes for u, and u try dodge it but get in the path of another, and so it goes on!!! And on top that theres these lil electric cars with 2342342 trailers behind them wizzing around the factory delivering parts that drive along where u walk X)
"pci cost" = PCI card *blush*
thanks for info guys, ill goto the airport and and enquire with the newly knowledge i have attained! And maybe ill be able to get a quote that is less than R250 a mg (on the guys defense he is from england so maybe they where pulling a fast one on him, or maybe the total price for hardware and everything he thought was price for 1 mg).

oops, i forgot pci is the one along the mother board. Thanks for clearing that up.

Does any of u guys know wheter is possible to share a connection (3g) with other users running xp that are conencted to a hub. Just like a mini network with no servers.
Will really appreciate it thanks!!
The problem im having is that it uses its own software and not a std xp internet connection.

I have a very simple setup at home. I setup my laptop with static IP 192.168.0.1 and set to share the connection. All my other PCs (on the ethernet network) I set to DHCP clients.

Any other visitor can plug into my network as long as they set their DHCP.

Works great.

Wireless Network Sharing Of Vodacom 3G card?

I have two laptops, one of which has a Vodacom 3G card. The internet connection on this card is shared.

If I connect the laptops via a network cable, I can share the card and access the internet from the second laptop.

However, if I connect the laptops to each other using an ad-hoc wireless network, I cannot access the 3G card from the second laptop. I can access files etc.

Any suggestions?

Safe your self a lot of hassle and get a 3G router form PC Mall www.pcmall.co.za

The biggest problem is that you can not use your 3G card and wi-if interface at the same time XP disables the one as soon as the other comes online.

IC) command for doze... route print

Sharing 3G, possible?

Is it possible to share 3G on a network between 2 pc's with cross-over cable (one Laptop and one Desktop), or with a switch without the LinkSys 3G Router? Maybe with normal Internet Sharing, etc...

If not, how much is it to buy a 3G Router?

Please help!!!! Appreciated.
