Sharing an HSPA Internet Connection using Windows ICS & other methods

Sure, thats what I do. The major drawback is that your laptop is now tethered, but other than that it works peachy.

The router is about R2 000ish, I don't know if its worth it for what you want to do.

I found that you can share it with ics but when I had signal problems the one pc wouldnt be able to connect and it was a real pain. You can get the router but it costs about R1600 wich is quite alot for just two pc's. I found a program on the internet that helped to get it working and never had problems since.

It works well and had absolutley no hassels since using it. It is a 30 day trial but it doesnt seem to stop working

Windows Internet Connection Sharing does a PERFECT job. If your network is configured correctly you won't have any problems whatsoever. I have been using this with 3G for almost 15 months without any problems at all.

You could share that connection with several PC's on your local lan and they will all have good speed, provided that one of them is not donwloading huge files all day long :)

Be aware though ... that each time you modify your profile on the Dashboard software it resets your NIC (network card) and you lose all your settings. This is one of my biggest peaves with Vodafone's dashboard software and it's something they have not fixed since version 4 and probably since version 1. I object to software vendors messing with settings on my machine without my consent. grrrrrr :)

web, ic, albert123 and pre-g-user......Ok, you say it works fine with Internet Connection Sharing, but is that without the 3G router or with? Thanks!

okay you dont need anything fancy, just a internet connection, so if its just a 3g card then that, i used ICS with a normal dial up connection for a long time. just install ICS on the computer that has internet, on that specific connection, then let the 2nd pc have DHCP enabled, and voila

Or even a little hub that you can pick up foer R200 bucks or somewhere there.. two or 3 pc's or laptop internet connection sharing...3G will just be the area u in...

anib0dy's ddproxy works very well and has such a small footprint. That is if you want to connect via a proxy. Otherwise ICS works extremely well if your network is set up correctly. :)

3G Sharing

We recently set up a 3G sharing network, so we can work from wherever..as a group
Novatel card on a Ubuntu laptop, Netgear wireless router hooked up to ubuntu laptop, sharing the connection with windows, and mac laptops. Trick is IP forwarding from the Ubuntu machine, and make sure everyone pre configs static IPs to be in the same range...and be sure to copy Vodacom DNS addresses on all laptops in the static IP section (Dunno what 3g bill will be yet)

3G sharing

I also have a laptop with the MTN HSDPA data card (using VC sim), and then a desktop for all the family to use, where we also want internet connectivity. We've been using the Nokia PC suite with bluetooth or cable to connect thru Nokia 6680 for connection on the PC.
The laptop has onboard 802g wireless, so now to get the desktop to use the laptop's HSDPA conn, I got a 'cheap?' (+-R250) USB wireless dongle for the desktop.
Just make the laptop's connection shared (under advanced tab, on the conn setting) connect the laptop & desktop via wireless (ad-hoc), and voila! I didn't need to change anything on the datacard dashboard prog.
If you open internet explorer on the desktop it connects thru the laptop's datacard.
And laptop is still free from cables to move about. Much cheaper than the expensive router.
But using lan cable between the two should work same.

True, but if you aren't using a hub then make sure it's a crossover cable. ;)

Sharing USB modem On Network

HI there

I have a wireless network setup at home, with a base computer and a notebook. I am wanting to share the Inet connection(vodacom 3g), but am failing to do so. Think it is maybe the vodacom software preventing others from seeing the connection. Please could some-one help me out as want to be able to access via both.

Also my phone says HSDPA enable, but when run speed testing only getting 280k download and as I converted from ADSL to this am not impressed by the speed, could some-one please advise on that as well, eg vodacom.

Regards
LJM

Hi LJM,

I have the same type of setup at home. There are two ways that I can suggest.

First, download a little program called CCProxy from the Net. Install it on the PC with the internet connection and run it. On the other PC, set up your browser (and any other software) to connect using a proxy server. Use the Internet PC's IP address and port 808. This is the default port that CCProxy uses. I couldn't get any games to work through the proxy server though, that is why I tried the second method.

The second way is to use Internet Connection Sharing with WinXP. It is a bit of a mission to set up though. If you are interested in trying this, PM me your email address and I will send you the info. You could also try and use the Network Setup Wizard in WinXP to set it up.

Hope this helps.

JJF.

Sharing a huawei E220 connection

Does anyone know if it is possible to share a 3g connection via a E220 between computers?

The Vodacom guys say no, but I am not sure?

Seems like im saying this alot... either ICS ( Internet Connection Sharing ) which i personally think is bollocks or you can use CCProxy ( allows you to set up a proxy server which other computers can connect to over LAN/WLAN ). As long as you have a internet profile on the HOST computer you can pretty much share it with anything or anyone.

If you need help if you going the CCProxy route dont hesitate to ask :D

Yep I have been through ICS and your assessment is spot on! :)
I will have a go at CCproxy!

Why don't you write a short how-to and I'll put it in the FAQ?
