Sharing an HSPA Internet Connection using Windows ICS & other methods

Just a newb question here , but would the speed of your remote laptop not be influenced at all by connecting to the "host" laptop , the one with the E220 modem connected to it ?
 
Put it this way...
Even if that laptop is hellishly old, it has 802.11b wireless, which runs at 11Mb/s.
Thats more than your internet connection can do anyway.

So in THAT sense, the slower host wont have much of an impact.
A more powerful host is not a waste of money/time, as you will see the improvement when you cross the 5 clients line.
If you add filesharing and firewalling and packet-scanning, the more powerful host for 5+ clients would be HIGHLY recommended.

...Still not NECESSARY in the highest sense of the word.


More to your question, yes, the host will feel a LITTLE slowed by the client if you pay REAL close attention. But for the average user, you will barely even know about it.
 
Thanks wheunis , you have answered my question perfectly . I think I will be fine as my wifes laptop (host) which she hardly uses at home ,will be the host for my laptop (remote) when I take it home evenings and weekends as I will be the only other "user" connecting to her pc , I think I should be fine .
 
Yes, that should do fine. Happy to help.

The only time it becomes an issue, is if the host is playing a resource-intense game while the client is streaming a video, copying large files, and browsing the net at the same time.

I doubt that is ever going to happen , its almost never that the two of us are on the net at the same time . Thanks once again .
 
OK , I have just tried to connect to my host computer through network connection wizard , but to no avail . I have allowed both laptops to connect to each other through the wizard but I am doing something wrong . If someone would be so kind as to help me out telephonically , please pm me your phone number and I will call you .
 
ok thanks wheunis , I have followed those steps dilligently but still cant seen to get it to work . Please can somebody in the P.E area help me ??????
 
I'd also look at setting up small Linux box that front-ends the router and run bandwidth management software on it.

Will even allow you to bill seperate users, if you feel so inclined.

Thanks 3G but I dont think it necessary as I use the pc 99% of the time . All that I am tryting to do is connect my "client" laptop to my "host" but I am really battling .

At this point i would much rather suggest you visit a network provider to set it up for you.
I would say "hey, call me!", but as it is right now, i do network setup only on a project basis for friends or as a freelance.

I work mostly with international buyers though; Luckily they pay well :D
 
Smurf , I have tried to create the adhoc network , but to no avail . I dont know if there is a setting previously created on my laptop which is not allowing it to connect .

Best scenario i can see for you is to get a PCI wireless card for your desktop.
Set that card into APN (Access Point) mode.
All your laptops etc get connected to that APN wirelessly.

Connect your xbox to the ethernet port on your desktop.

This effectively turns your deskto into a Access Point / switch.
Connect your USB to the desktop and (becoz you mentioned it) install CCProxy on the desktop.

This way, your desktop becomes the centre-point of your network, and all your pc's can use the same connection, including the xbox, without getting the xbox wireless adapter.

You should be able to pick up a Linksys PCI card for around R150, and theres a lot of free software to handle the basics of APN mode.

This will probably be the cheapest way to do what you want.

Sorry, just going back to this. How is this different to what i have setup at the moment? I have an ad-hoc network & both laptops connect to the desktop via a USB wireless adapter on the desktop. If i was to have a crossover cable between the desktop & X-Box i would think the X-Box would have internet access & file sharing. Would the above option eliminate the crossover cable (this is only need for file sharing) ?

Not sure then, maybe try CCProxy. I set mine up by following post 48 in this thread

Just that you will need to "bridge" your wifi and LAN connections... maybe not, im not sure about how your CCProxy is set up.
Just keep in mind if all but the xbox gets through to your internet, you may need to bridge.
 
To be that coldly honest, not me.
The last time i did that i had to almost kill a guy to STOP calling me for every keyboard button he cant find.
Not before he gave my number to his sister, mother, friends, etc.

So... no.

ok thanks, i dont think I'll need need to bridge them cos it works off whatever the IP address is for the connected devices, but I'll connect a laptop via ethernet to check

I should be done with all the Qs now, thanks again
