Sharks Supporters Thread

@ Pixual and cr@zydude, good points, the dilemma is interesting. No matter which route they take someone is going to have their feet trodden on.

The concept of parking adjacent to M/B is not a bad one. But maybe that'll wait until after their bid for 2020.

I suppose there will need to be incentives for the Sharks to move to M/B, or has something already been offered?

Getting them to move would involve some consumer action (just don't go to the games until they fix up their shît stadium).

But people in Durban are ordinarily so nonplussed by everything that it would probably be easier to ban Diwali fireworks. Everything here is turning to crap, so it wouldn't surprise me if it never happens. Just look at the alleged FM radio station we have here. Bunch of idiots with their heads stuffed so far up their own arses that they're almost breathing their own bile.

I gave up listening to ECR, but the alternatives weren't many :(

The city council could offer an incentive, or they could simply squeeze them out. CT is now charging the WPRU for traffic services at matches. Durban could do the same. The city will also likely not give the NRU any building approval to expand or renovate Kings Park.

NRU / Sharks need to pull their heads out of their butts too. Kings Park Stadium is just rubbish. Really. And their marketing is so last century it's embarrassing. Sharks flasher girls? Push-up boys? WTF? Get some of our local musical talent on a stage INSIDE the stadium at half time to play three songs - and trust me, we have PLENTY musical talent in Durban.

If they had any brains they would have moved into MM long ago. As a Sharks fan I am really disappointed that they don't "feel the need" to improve conditions for their fans and also the players. You should see the media facilities at KP - it's like going back in time to when John Vorster was still Prime Minister of the country!

I've done quite a bit of work at MM and every time I have been there it's never failed to impress me. Probably in the top 5 of world stadia.

Still think Moses Madiba is not as well suited as kings park for being close to the action. Even the best seats in the house at MM are set back from the actual touchlines. It certainly would remove the feeling of being "close to the action" that Kings park has. While I agree that MM is a fantastic design for a football stadium and the ability to get people out quickly is much better I think the actual spectator experience is reduced. At the end of the day the Sharks are competing with HD television, if the stadium cannot offer a compelling experience then people will watch on TV.

I also think the financial thing cannot be discounted, the Sharks have to go from a situation where they own their current stadium to paying rent at a stadium that was designed entirely without their input. Moving to MM makes very little financial sense, personally I would rather the sharks stay at Kings park and use that money to retain existing players and develop new one's rather than move to a new stadium which is not ideally suited to rugby.

Many could argue that the experience is better at Moses Mabhida due to better facilities. Also the Sharks (actually the NRU) do not own Kings Park, they rent it.

In terms of people watching the game, how much better are the facilities really? I agree that getting in and out of MM is a lot easier but what else is there really that is so much better? The big screen is better, but actually viewing the game is worse as mentioned in the previous. What other facilities are you referring to? Am fully aware that the media facilities at MM are better but that only affects journalists. I own a season ticket and went to MM during the world cup, it looks fantastic (but a the cost is should) but at the end of the day I don't buy season tickets to look at a pretty stadium, what extra facilities does MM have that benefits fans?

With regards to the ownership, that is correct. However I wonder if Durban council are offering equivalent financing at MM taking into account loss of revenue from corporate suites.

I don't know all the financial issues involved, and sure, there must be some, BUT the fact remains: Kings Park Rugby Stadium is falling to pieces. It's grubby, grimy and has too many little dark corners where illicit goings on occur. Right across the road we have a Billion Rand stadium that everyone is hugely proud of, but we can't watch rugby there because some big knobs say so. Trust me, I hate Mike Sutcliffe more than I hate Malema, but it pains me to see such a wonderful asset to the city go to waste. The stadium will be there long after the ANC eventually dies. It shouldn't be a political points scoring issue.

The seating may not be as steeply angled towards the pitch as KP, but I don't see that as a bad thing. I've fallen on my arse a few times trying to descend that bloody Eastern stand in the rain!

NRU should be careful. It would not surprise me if SA Rugby decide to host their tests there instead of at KP in future.

Time for a poll :D

But before a poll is started I reckon we need to jot down all the pros and cons to assist the forumites in making an informed decision ;)

I am happy to consolidate all of them and we can ask one of the mods to assist. Thoughts?

I think that's already happening. SARU awarded this years Aus test to Durban, saying that it was on condition of the outcome of talks with the NRU. I assume SARU will say take the match to MMS or we will. SARU actually ran the Soccer City test last year, not the GLRU.

A poll sounds like a nice idea

@Pixual - Very good point, I hadn't thought about the East Stand and how horrible it actually is. I have only had the misfortune to sit on that side twice and on the second ascent I feared for my life. Having West stand seats makes all the difference I guess, in that regard MM would probably be a major improvement for those that sit in the east stand.

This is Rugby bru, not some music festival. If you want music, wait till the end of the game. I mean music over cheerleaders? COME ON.....fail

Never sat on the East stand :o ... it's always been West at the games I've been too.

I can tell you horror stories about the construction of that East stand that will make you think twice before you ever set foot on it again. The company that made the seating slabs were given the wrong measurements by the designers and the supporting braces were too wide apart. So they made a plan...

The worst part of the East stand is when you're sitting in the setting sun. Can't see a thing, but you'll sweat yourself to dehydration...

So the horror of it's construction  will prevent me from experiencing the free "sauna" in the setting sun :)

"Mr Price" Kings Park

28 January 2011 (08:30) - The Sharks and Mr Price are proud to announce the new name of The Shark Tank which will now be called Mr Price KINGS PARK.

As Title Sponsor of The Sharks for the past 10 years, Mr Price has been an integral part of The Sharks and as a company, have now extended their partnership by securing naming rights for the stadium.

KINGS PARK has been home to rugby in the province and now Mr Price KINGS PARK is a return to the well-loved and cherished name associated with an equally revered team.

The psychology of sport often goes beyond just the sport itself - the team's name as well as its home are important factors that drive allegiance to that team. The Sharks, as they became known in 1995 when the sport of rugby became professional, was a massive shift away from the old "Banana Boys" reference to the provincial team.

And like its home - KINGS PARK - known the world over for its hospitable, family environment, so The Sharks have grown to become one of the most recognisable sports brands in the world, certainly one of the biggest in South Africa - indeed, a Superbrand.

Mr Price KINGS PARK has a proud history and, for over forty years, has hosted many memorable provincial and international events, such as the Rugby World Cup as well as being the home of The Sharks and various rugby teams, like Duikers, Sharks XV, Sharks Under 19s, Under 21s and the Sharks Academy.

Source.

Somehow it doesn't feel right? :o

At least they've got a sponsor and moved on from "ABSA" ... and they've brought back the "Kings" Park bit :)

The whole precinct, including Moses Mabibibibidada, is Kings Park. When the ANC are all dead we'll rename it Kings Park again. Along with all our street names that were in existence for over a hundred years before these revolutionary names were forced upon us. ;)

Aha, just proves we're still better than the yellow card men (DHL?) :p even though the scoreline suggests something else

Ag, I take more positives as a Sharks supporter than a WeePee one from that match. They won it at the death, by one point, while we were down one man and after we went the whole game losing players left, right and center :)
