Shopping for a new ISP

Very prompt responses to my email queries.

On a Saturday morning no less.

Impressed. Will be trying.

Thanks copa. We offer 24 hour support on weekdays and day-time support on weekends, so the current service levels are our benchmark moving forward and not a special case for today...

@Crystal Web, I am looking forward to trying my new account later today. Thanks to you guys for such quick and prompt response on a SATURDAY! Will post some findings later

Sorry, another question?

What backbone are you on?

EDIT: I see it's already been asked.

One of the interesting bits about this is that most people's issues with backbones has been around the ISP's reseller model, whereby the backbone provider dictates the policy and the ISP is forced to build products around this, meaning that the backbone provider became an important question to tech-savvy users. We on the other hand are not subjected to this issue as per our shaping policies that we sent through to you, which for now we are keeping out of the public domain.

We've also simplified our products. We've created a single uncapped product for home users with fantastic service levels, no complicated shaping policies, no throttling, no usage limits, no complex AUPs etc. We've done the same for our business products, which let's face it, should be for businesses - not used as a desperate measure by home users to get decent connectivity. And we have capped products. All of our products allow for a user to migrate their line to us, and we actually offer substantial discounts for doing so. With our 24 hour support and access to diagnostic and resolution tools on the line itself, we can offer a better quality of service to customers on this basis than what they'd normally receive from an 8am to 5pm ISP or fixed line provider.

We are a group of dedicated mybroadband members who coneptualised, funded, and implemented this business to please mybroadband members specifically, knowing that if we could do so at the right price-points and offering great support, we could please anyone. So far our customers will attest to how well our offerings perform across the spectrum, and the fact that our support staff are actively asking us about what else they can do because of the lack of needed support so far is further testament to this. And we're okay with that - we keep them busy internally. :D

We're excited about our launch, and apologies that we're not going to disclose everything in the public domain just yet - we felt it necessary to join officially and begin to engage as we already have a great base of mybroadband customers, and the word is starting to spread. We also need to keep certain things close to our chest for the time being. Like our spectacular news server access; fibre projects, partnerships with fantastic organisations, and more. We will slowly release more and more information soon, as well as launch with quite a bang. Keep your eyes on the news section of mybroadband over the coming weeks for more details. And the competition sections...:)

Not a problem. We'll work whatever hours and whatever days are necessary to ensure that our customers have the best possible experience. We're very pleased to see that you've made the best connection!

Don't get me wrong, this sounds great. :)

I'm happy with my ISP now but I didn't have anywhere to go when things eventually go pear shaped, again.

Back to the backbone thing, I was asking more along the lines of finding out POP/IPC locations, but I'll wait for the launch :)

We have significant IPC capacity in all major cities around South Africa...

I have a feeling tho that your awesome new client portal will send me over regardless ;)

Keen to see the website :)

I'm happy with Plugg but their portal really suck.

Will CW home uncapped allow two concurrent connections?

Off the bat, we can offer two concurrent uncapped connects for two times the price of one concurrent connection ;)
what do you have in mind though with concurrent uncapped though? - Splitting the speed by 2?
Also what is the usage case?

After following the recent nonsense with other ISPs we made a decision to only allow single concurrent connections on our Crystal Clear uncapped accounts, with an unlock facility for our customers in their customer portal to open it for use on another line. We are open to building custom products for our customers should there be a need for them.

Our capped accounts however allow for unlimited concurrent connections at full line speed...

The way Plugg uncapped works is you share the speed. So if my partner isn't using it I get full speed (8 Mbps account). He tends to download 0:00-6:00. I like to stream at night. So our peak usage tends to not overlap.

Currently in our product range the capped accounts would be best suited for you, but should more enquiries follow about concurrent connections then we'll certainly look into creating such a product. We do however want to keep our offerings to a minimal, for both simplicity's sake...

Did you check with your partner last night when you were having crap nntp speeds?

Still need to check but he usually downloads from 0:00. In any case my line speed is more than his so worst case I should have got 4 Mbps not 1 Mbps. Also while I was only getting 1 Mbps I could stream. So it was clearly nntp shaping.

Interesting. Thanks for the info :)

EDIT: Plugg server or paid server?
