Shopping spree (need help)

I just got another quote with the changes including a Raidmax 730W PSU. That adds R310 to the price but overall its down to R11355, which is still R1700 better off tho.

That's with the 512 Geforce 250 tho.

Ok, well then 11.5k it is. Now see if any other place can have that beat.

any specific reason you wanna go nvidia?

also, dont skimp on your power supply. this is a pet peeve of mine. guys spend fat cash on CPU, gfx etc and then skimp on the one component that is capable of blowing the whole lot up!

remember Watt is not the bee all and end all. I would take my Corsair HX520W over these 600/700 watt "specials" any day of the week. I dont have a hectic system, but I did spend cash on my PSU. Do the research and you will see.. seriously, dont take my word for it! google is your friend! :D

oh.. and the 4870 prices are about to come down... :)

No, I'd be cool with ati but the 4850 and Geforce 250 is pretty similar in performance and price right?

Unless the 4870 drops a good R500, its still a little out of reach.

I see prophecy already has the force3d 4870 for 2k. That is a seriously attractive prospect. But come on - 2100 for a 260/1800 for a 1gb 250 is a VERY good price. Nvidia prices are pretty competitive with ati recently.

Well there goes my main form of finding out about a product - reviews.

Know if my Raidmax 730W is good enough?

ok, I think you need to put some more thought into this process...

you looking to get a serious system, but you not willing (?) to pay the price. Is R11k your moral limit, or is that the money that you have?

All Im saying is that you have managed to save R11k all you need to save is another couple of grand and you wont have to skimp in areas that effect the whole goal of the PC.

ie. cheaper gfx on a 1920 res = fail
2GB DDR800 ram on a Quad Core = fail
Raidmax (unknown) PSU = fail

IMO cant you save a bit more and get what you should be getting?

You are worth it! :D:D

Okay, here's where it gets all circular tho. I mean, I'm upgrading my LCD to take advantage of the resolutions that the system can deliver...but now that I'm taking advantage of the resolutions it can deliver, I need to play it safe and have better RAM, PSU and GPU. ARGH!

I'm gonna see if they have that Odin. And the 4870 at Prophecy is worth it. But the RAM as well? Are you sure the 800 will hamper things that much?

Cos then the only other option is to maybe downgrade the HD to 250GB (I have a 500 external as well) and possibly the 23" monitor to 22 or 21.

Well...the thing is that 23" sammy lcd prices are just unbeatable right now...you're crazy if you skimp by saving a couple of hundred rands for a 22" and miss out on the potential for true hi-def viewing. Might as well stick with your 19" or whatever for a couple of months until you can stump up the rest. And hard drives are also insanely well priced, and believe me you WILL end up filling 500gb and then some. I'm already stretched to capacity on my 500gb and I never thought i'd manage to fill it. But then you can always buy more hard drive space later on down the line. But you cannot buy a bigger monitor without making a loss.

And I thought the goal was to have a gaming PC. There's nothing circular about that - what we're trying to do here is maximise your budget so you can get the best possible gaming experience. That means ensuring that you don't fall down in any single area.

How much do you think I can sell my Acer AL1951 19" for? And my 7900GT?

Also PcInt just told me they don't do Gigabyte so no Odin unless I nab parts from all over and find someone to put Humpty Dumpty together.

19" = 1k, 7900gt = 5-600.

I tell you, it is really not that hard to put it together yourself. And you'll learn a lot about how pc's work by getting under the hood a bit. Why not try it?

I have enough stress in my life without having to worry about screwing up my new 11k baby. I'd happily pay R200 for the peace of mind of knowing it will be put together exactly as it should.
