Should I buy now, or wait?

I'm betting on early in the new year. :)

I'm with you on this one. The holiday season is coming up in the us and if it's not been released in time for this then it will probably be in the new year. The music store content will be frozen this year during thanksgiving and christmas.
The loose schedule is really Macworld, WWDC, back to school in September, the October ipod/whatever in time for the holiday season. Seeing that apple is not going to Macworld anymore it can be announced at another event.
Just buy the damn thing if you want it - the last and truly groundbreaking event was the shift to intel.

The year-end line-up of Apple products is normally finalized about now and then remains unchanged till about the end of January.

The MBPs have just seen a stealth update with the introduction of an i7 2.8 option to the top end of the line-up.

I'd say that the next major MBP refresh is due in June or later at the same time as 10.7 Lion. There is a chance that the current MBP is the last of this unibody form factor, I expect that the next gen will drop the DVD in favour of onboard SSD and even bigger batteries.

My vote is to get one of the new 15" 2.8 today.

And that's the fastest mobile i7 at the moment, so I guess that does it for updates. Unless they surprise us and make the MBP available with the Extreme Edition (2GHz and 2.13GHz quad core) but that would mean a jump from 35W TDP to 55W and the corresponding reduction in battery life.

I expect that the next gen will drop the DVD in favour of onboard SSD and even bigger batteries.
For all I care they can do that right now.

any idea when will Uncle Steve decide to put USB 3.0 & Blu-Ray optical drives in the Macbooks?

The prices of macbook pro's in SA are way too high. Has anyone imported one ? What's the best way to take advantage of the R/$ exchange rate at the moment ?
I need to replace my MBP - with the i5 + 8Gb
