My wife has been in South Africa since she was 4 years old. Permanent Resident.

She is not allowed to vote and she is not allowed to get the new plastic ID card.

Nope.. no voting for you if you broke the law and you are still in prison. You chose to operate outside the rules of society, so deal with it.

Linking voting to income tax sounds like a good idea, until the unemployed burn down the country because that is then literally the only thing they can do to change it.... (I know, they could get jobs to enable them to get a vote but in SA with our unemployment it's a bit of a stretch.)

I would rather link voting to some form of community service. If you want to vote you need to prove that you have spent 50 hours since the last election helping out at a shelter, or cleaning a street, fixing or building something....etc.

For once, other was the appropriate choice for me.

Votes should be weighted depending on the amount you pay in taxes. This will remove free-loaders from the voting pool, as well as the "businessmen" tax-dodgers (or at least make their vote count for less).
