Should we be Naming & Shaming Drunk Drivers?

I'm not so sure about the huge fines... at the end of the day, doesn't matter if u fine me R50K or R500K, I don't have that kinda munny, so wont be able to pay anyways. It will also cause lotsa hardship to the driver's family.
But hard labour, and restricting freedoms, community service..that could work well.
Oh yes, and same for these idiots who don't buckle up their kids! Too many times I see some woman with a toddler standing on the seats

This is the pit, I sometimes wanna get out and give them a talking, but then I think Road Rage, might not be a good idea after all.

I reckon drunk drivers who are caught should spend a month in casualty ward at the local state hospital as observers, they will reform pronto...

Down here in George we had a father, mother & twin daughter killed
by a drunk driver, they had just finnished supper at the Garden
Route Mall and were on their way back to Knysna when the drunk driver
in bakkie totalled the family. The surviving daughter was in a critical
condition and has to go and live with her grand parents in PE.
It absolutely shocking how he was wrecked an entire family.

A friend of mine was killed on the same bridge (as the prev accident) crossing the N2 as you enter George from Wilderness, you guessed another drunk driver. The drunk drivers always seem to live.

Gees that's horrific!! Eish!! Very sad, I must say I would be inclined to put the drunk driver away for life. Hope he/she faces the full brunt of the law.....

That's a very sad story...:(:(:(:(

Its no better than murder so I think they deserve life.

Was driving from Johannesburg to East London (Mdantsane) yesterday between 11AM and 8PM. No major incidences fortunately! It was raining from Jamestown to East London. There were stationary ambulances on alert. Most people on the roads were driving sensibly. More often, I seeing broken Translux, Greyhound buses. I hope the jack-up maintenance because its simply unacceptable especially this time of the year.

The N6 road has improved a lot. Still some minor road works though. The municipalities are finally doing some good work.

Good luck to all the forumites travelling this festive season!

All you guys, have a great festive season!

Thanks, same to you, hope the weather in EL's better than in PE. :)

Heh, I'm also off to EL (Kei Mouth, actually) in a couple of days.

I'm planning to travel (daylight) to PE-CT-JHB from the 3rd Jan. I've never seen the scenic Garden Route. Any particular stops worth making along the way?

Knysna's nice, there's a place somewhere near Plett called Monkeyland, basically a primate/monkey sanctuary but its quite big and open, very interesting if you like that sort of thing.

Name them. I think all sex criminals (particularly relating to kids) should be named as well.

The people in question (drunk drivers) have paid their debt to society - they've been found guilty and sentenced to either a term of restriction of the freedom of movement or a monetary fund, in some cases possibly even both.

To me there seems NO POINT in naming these people. In fact I think its in breach of their rights to privacy and probably unconstitutional.

As for sex offenders I can only assume naming child molesters should be
done to protect children AND NOT FOR ANY OTHE REASON. Once again,
if they've been appropriately sentenced fair enough. A sex offender
registry is a good idea but once again there should be access restrictions as sometimes innocent people are labelled this or that, once this happens
even if found innocent in a court or if they are exhonorated the stigmata stays behind. I think this should be the case for all crimes, use the courts
to punish criminals, keep the sentences out of the public view and only use some sort of sex offender list to protect
kids but not for any other crimes etc.

As for employers, formal screening for criminal record should be allowed but
only by a regulated impartial body.
