Should you pay to stop SMS spam?

A battle is brewing over the fact that consumers may be charged when asking to be excluded in direct SMS marketing

This annoys the crap out of me, having to sms STOP "to opt out". Then you pay R1.50 for that sms. That is how they make their money. If they spam 100,000 cell numbers and only 2000 people sms STOP that's a cool R30,000 earned for nothing. Fsckers.

That is why I don't reply with STOP, and rather install an app to just block SMS's with certain keywords in. It is easy to just filter out SMSs with the sentence "reply stop" and then bam you don't get those SMS's anymore. Much easier for me, and I don't have to re-do it every time a new spammer spams me.

A zero rated opt-out would be open to abuse. If I hated a WASP I could just continuously send STOP messages to them knowing that they will be charged.

Certain companies do that.
Our campaigns that we run only use standard rates for reply sms.

This is not ideal as the reply/return sms should not be billed to client, but we are working on using reverse billed codes.

Unfortunately we all get painted with the same brush in this industry.

That is the biggest problem why it hasn't been implemented yet.
The control of this would be huge.

Your abuse scenario doesnt make sense - If they keep sending you would keep replying stop, seems like they are stupid to keep sending

Not at all
Even if they don't send you messages you can still reply to that number with "STOP".
Each time a sms is sent the recipient will pay.

If you have registered on www.nationaloptout.co.za you should not be receiving sms's and calls.
