Should you pay to stop SMS spam?

I bet we'd be getting a lot less garbage sms if they had to cover the costs of the sms to opt people out! Make it so :p

I sometimes recieve SMSs spam from non-DMASA members... so whats to do about that?

Send me there details and I will spam them, as they are the ones who are causing the over-regulation of our business.

I know it is a cumbersome task but you can lodge a complaint with WASPA, they are not the best but it's something.

Certain companies do that.
Our campaigns that we run only use standard rates for reply sms.

This is not ideal as the reply/return sms should not be billed to client, but we are working on using reverse billed codes.

Unfortunately we all get painted with the same brush in this industry.

Why not just bill them double from the word go and after the campaign or a couple of month later give them a credit.

So they send out 100 messages, you bill them for 200. If 50 consumers reply with a stop then they end up paying for 150 [100 messages + 50 stops] so they get 50 credit back and the consumer pays nothing.

It then makes it their problem and if they are honest they should have no problem paying double from the start. Should sort out those unethical marketers for whom there will be no gain in it anymore.

This is how it would probably work as the aggregator carries the cost for the campaign, we prepay for credits

Even when we run affinity campaigns we get a fairly high "opt out" rate, which will be very costly in the end.

It helps, but I still receive sms and recorded call spam. The recorded voice spam is the worst because you can't tell the person to unsubscribe you..

By law they need to include the "opt out" to the client.

We call these "white label"
They creative is not branded so they can be sold to any underwriter.

Our response rates on while label sms's are way higher than branded ones.

But how do I get them to stop? Opt Out does not work, Im already registered on that database.

Your business entails intruding on people's lives. It functions much like ambulance chasers and other bottom feeders.

This argument should be framed differently.

When you buy a phone/SIM card they should be an option on the form where you tick should volunteer to OPT-IN ; rather than making it a requirement to go to some under publicised website to opt-out!

It is really under-handed that the mafia-style cell phone companies sell your contact details to these spammers/bottom feeders without your permission. This should and will be challenged on constitutional grounds soon.

An advanced call and sms filtering system offered by the networks would be awesome. I'd even be willing to pay small monthly fee for such a service.

Cell C already has a basic free service like this called Mytools. I can divert unwanted numbers directly to voicemail or record custom voicemail greetings for them.

MyTools is unfortunately limited in that it cannot block number ranges and there's no functionality for sms filtering. Would be nice to have some sort of filter that blocks all smses containing text such as "stop", "opt out", etc.

Hear, hear!

This annoys the crap out of me, having to sms STOP "to opt out". Then you pay R1.50 for that sms. That is how they make their money. If they spam 100,000 cell numbers and only 2000 people sms STOP that's a cool R30,000 earned for nothing. Fsckers.

Actually the revenue share on that is about 20-30c last time I checked, not R1.50 as the networks get the lions share.
