Showing certain forums to registered members only

This doesnt make sense other than to boost the member count on myBB, actually it will do the opposite.

Do you know how many sites ive told to kiss my arse because they asked me to login first to read a paragraph or two?

i think some people on the forum need it to hide articles that trigger them, like racial matters

he he. Or just create 1 forum called "Safe Space". Allow the random(Of course its a fictional user we are referring to) member only access to said Safe Space.
They can even moderate themselves.

It makes sense from MyBB's side to do this as there are a few threads with very questionable content that they wouldn't want to be associated with. So to prevent lawsuits or losing potential/current advertisers is not in their best interest to have it open to the public.

From what I have seen however the "hidden" threads were more image heavy ones like:

• Funny pictures
• Photoshop Game
• Interesting Pictures
• etc

But I don't follow most of the political/banter threads so there's probably a lot more. Maybe if we could see a list of the effected threads it would help put people at ease or make them more mindful of the content they post. Just my 2 cents worth.

Something to keep in mind – MyBroadband is largely protected from these threats, but the person who posted the comment is not. The threat to forum members is therefore much larger than for the publication.

Not true. MyBB can be held accountable for the content that is hosted on their site. A defamed person/entity can hold both the poster and the publisher (MyBB) accountable. Once a publisher becomes aware of content that defames a person and does not remove it, they become as responsible as the poster and can be joined in any legal action.

Unless it is for legal reasons and the entire site is under threat I don't see why it should be hidden from search engines. Many a helpful discussion was found in Off Topic forums that have helped me solve other issues. But if needs must then so be it... We are but a small cog.

I think that the concept of a Members Only side to the site is a sign of the times, and should be welcomed. Many sites have such restrictions on the whole site. RPM is suggesting only certain areas. When the site started there were very few subjects, mostly Technical in nature, and only one internet provider. Times have changed, it is inevitable that MBB does too.

This is an insightful comment which is spot on. It is, in fact, surprising how little the forum has changed over the past 17 years considering the changes in society and the Internet.

This has nothing to do with advertising or advertisers. We have not received any complaints from commercial clients.

The complaints are typically legal demands for content to be removed for various reasons, like companies being criticized, religious issues, cultural issues and the like.

The problem with these legal demands, and potential legal action, is that it makes very little difference whether it holds legal merit or not. Most people think being on the right side of the law protects you – this is not the case.

If someone sues you for defamation, it is going to cost you a lot of money. The legal costs will always dwarf the settlement, if there is one.

What stops these complaints being made when certain forums are private? Registered users can still lodge complaints, a company representative could be a member. Might be just prevent these threads from appearing in search engine results.
